Expedition Deep Ocean is a fascinating read, in part because it relates how fractious the Five Deeps Expedition was & how inattentive to detail so many senior members of the expedition were. These people are the best in the world at what they do? This reinforces my growing belief that competence is one of the human qualities in shortest supply. It's all the more astonishing that Victor Vescovo achived the goal of the Five Deeps Expedition, & survived ten dives to the Challenger Deep.
Of course, compared to the 18 June 2023 implosion of the Oceangate submersible Titan during an attempted dive to the wreck of the R.M.S. Titanic, the Five Deeps Expedition evinced an impressive degree of competence.
