Operation AXIOM: After the World War—The Fiume Endeavor, Part I
12 September 1919: The Impresa di Fiume ("Endeavor of Fiume")—Gabriele D'Annunzio led a force of Italian veterans, irredentists, & fascists to Fiume (now Rijeka, Croatia) & seized the formerly Austro-Hungarian Adriatic port; D'Annunzio claimed Fiume for Italy, rather than see it given to the new Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, & Slovenes (Yugoslavia), but Rome repudiated him & imposed a blockade.
Lest we forget.
