The Rebel Black Dot Song o' the Day: SKAfter Party

Reel Big Fish, "Auld Lang Syne" from the Happy Skalidays E.P. (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary: Thanks for skanking along, rude boys & rude girls. I'm confident there will be more ska songs chosen as the R.B.D.S.O.T.D. 'twixt now & SKAugust, but the time has come to call an end to the SKAfter Party for 2020. Now seems a propitious moment for change: Easter is giving way to Ordinary Time, Sunday Mass is available again, May is giving way to June, American astronauts are launching on American rockets from American soil after nearly a decade of launching on Russian rockets from Kazakh soil.

The Stars My Destination: Demo-2 Launch

Liftoff! Launch America-link. These United States are once again capable of launching astronauts into outer space after nearly a decade of depending on hitching rides from our partners in Russia. I support the International Space Station (I.S.S.) as an international effort, with both the United States Orbital Segment & the Russian Orbital Segment working together to form one amazing machine that has enabled nigh-on twenty years of continuous human habitation in low earth orbit. But between the increasingly frequent malfunctions with the Russians' Soyuz & Progress spacecraft (designs that originated in the 1960s) & the often contentious terrestrial relations between the United States of America & the Russian Federation, it is good to have an alternate means of delivery crew to the I.S.S.

Code Name: CHAOS
The first SpaceX Dragon capsule to carry astronauts to the I.S.S. has a name: Endeavour, named after the Space Shuttle on which both DM-2 astronauts had their maiden spaceflights. The Endeavour OV-105 is the only Space Shuttle your humble narrator has seen with his own eyes, in the Samuel Oschin Pavilion at the California Science Center in Los Angeles. Seeing the Endeavour, standing under the giant space plane was a tremendously affecting experience, almost mystical; much more affecting & impressive than I'd anticipated.

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, "Kinder Words" (live) from Live from the Middle East (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary: This is an earnest plea for peace, throughout the country but most especially in the Twin Cities. Violence is not the answer to violence; injustice is not the answer to injustice.
"Kinder words here we could pick,
A kind approach might do the trick,
Hurt you? Hurt me! Well, that needs to stop.
Kinder words here we could choose
We've kind of got a lot to lose,
The temperature? We need that to drop…"

Melbourne Ska Orchestra, "While You Wait" from Melbourne Ska Orchestra (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary:
"She's giving you all of the signs,
So make your move, walk, get in line,
This girl, she is one of a kind.

"Come on, take a ride and feel the bumps as you fly,
'Cause if you don't try, she'll think you are wasting her time.

"While you wait, oh, while you wait, she's gone,
While you wait, oh, while you wait, she's gone,
While you wait and hesitate,iIt's someone else steppin' in your place,
While you wait, oh, while you wait, she's gone.

"Can only wait so long
Before another comes along
To sweep her off her feet
And you'll run crying…"

The Rebel Black Dot Song o' Today: SKAfter Party

Mittwoch, 27. Mai
Less Than Jake, "Whatever the Weather" from the Sound the Alarm E.P. (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary: I had a different R.B.D.S.O.T.D. lined up to celebrate the launch of DM-2, the first launch of a crewed spacecraft to orbit from American soil in danged near nine years (the longest period without a launch since Alan Shepard barked at Mission Control, "Why don't you fix your little problem & light this candle!," on 5 May 1961), but since the launch was scrubbed due to unfavorable weather conditions, that song would have seemed gauche. Make no mistake, the title of today's R.B.D.S.O.T.D. notwithstanding, I do not in any way doubt that scrubbing the launch was the right call.
"It's out of my hands, these too-heavy times,
No matter the weather, I'll never waver…"

The Rebel Black Dot Song o' Yesterday: SKAfter Party

Dienstag, 26. Mai
Goldfinger, "Am I Deaf" from The Knife (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary:
"Sometimes I feel so old, yeah, am I deaf
Or am I just a little left of what they listen to today?
You know, I sound just like my dad did to me,
Have I found a way out of all the misery?
Music used to make me free:
The Who, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys,
Does anyone have something left to say?…"

Operation AXIOM: Destination Moon—The 51st Anniversary of Apollo 10, Part III
26 May 1969: The Command Module Charlie Brown splashed down in the Pacific Ocean & was recovered by crewmen from the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Princeton; Tom Stafford, John Young, & Gene Cernan were flown first to American Samoa & then to Hawai'i; the stage was now set to attempt the first Moon landing, with seven months left to meet President Kennedy's goal of the end of the 1960s.

James Darren, "Here's to the Losers" from This One's from the Heart (Space Cadet Mike Papa Whiskey)

Commentary: I tease the crew of Apollo 10 only out of a deep affection & affinity. They played their part in the great drama of Project Apollo with poise & professionalism, setting the stage for Armstrong, Collins, & Aldrin's historic feat during Apollo 11. So close, yet so far, but weep not for Stafford, Young, & Cernan. SPOILER ALERT: Young walked on the Moon as Commander of Apollo 16 & Cernan as the Commander of Apollo 17, making them two of only twelve men to walk on the Moon & two of the three—along with Jim Lovell (Apollo 8 & Apollo 13)—to have twice journeyed from the Earth to the Moon & back. Stafford served as the Commander of the final Apollo mission, the Détente-era Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. Here's to the losers!

"Weird Al" Yankovic, "Close but No Cigar" from Straight Outta Lynwood (Space Cadet Mike Papa Whiskey)

Commentary: When most persons think about the Apollo program, to the admittedly limited extent that most persons are ever likely to think about Apollo, those thoughts are most likely confined to Apollo 11 (the first Moon landing), Apollo 13 (the "successful failure"), & Apollo 8 (the first journey from the Earth to the Moon & back). But every Apollo flight was important & each preparatory mission (Apollos 7, 8, 9, & 10) played a vital role in laying the groundwork for Armstrong, Collins, & Aldrin's epochal triumph on Apollo 11. "Close but No Cigar" tells the tale of a man who dates three amazingly beautiful, intelligent, & accomplished women, only to reject each because of absurdly trivial reasons. Anyone who looks down their earthbound nose at the heroes of Apollo 10 & their accomplishments in space would miss the joke of "Close but No Cigar."

Scripture of the Week
Mass Readings—Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord
The Acts of the Apostles, chapter one, verses one thru eleven;
Psalm Forty-seven (R/. six), verses two & three, six & seven, & eight & nine;
The Letter to the Ephesians, chapter one, verses seventeen thru twenty-three;
The Gospel according to Matthew, chapter twenty-eight, verses nineteen(a) & twenty(b).

Commentary: Reflection by Bishop Robert Barron (Word on Fire):
Friends, in today’s Gospel Jesus assures us that he will always remain with us. Only when we realize that our lives are situated in a context of a Life that stretches infinitely beyond them, only when we know that our wills are related to a Will that encompasses and surpasses the whole of the cosmos, are we ready to live.

Matthew brings his Gospel to completion with Jesus’ Great Commission: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations… And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” We must come to terms with the fact that our lives are not about us.

There is Another who will tie us up and take us where we never imagined we could or would go; there is a Power that is operative in us and accompanies us whether we know it or not and that will accomplish what we, by our own power, could never accomplish.
Video reflection by Father John Crossin, O.S.F.S. (U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops): Ascension Reflection.

In rest of the world outside of Anglophone North America the Solemnity of the Ascension is observed on the traditional date, the Thursday forty days after the Resurrection of the Lord, today is the Seventh Sunday of Easter: Wikipedia-link VII Sunday, Pascha-link & Wikipedia-link Paschaltide.

Mass Readings—Seventh Sunday of Easter
The Acts of the Apostles, chapter one, verses twelve, thirteen, & fourteen;
Psalm Twenty-seven (R/. thirteen), verses one, four, & seven & eight;
The First Letter of Peter, chapter four, verses thirteen thru sixteen;
The Gospel according to John, chapter seventeen, verses one thru eleven(a).

Commentary: Reflection by Bishop Robert Barron (Word on Fire):
Friends, in today’s Gospel Jesus, the high priest of the New Covenant, asks the Father to give eternal life to his followers.

But whereas the ordinary high priests of the Old Testament passed through the veil into the earthly holy of holies and offered an inadequate sacrifice, the perfect high priest passed into the heavenly sanctuary, bearing the sins of the world and bringing forth the divine forgiveness: “But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that have come to be . . . he entered once for all into the sanctuary, not with the blood of goats and calves but with his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.”

The letter to the Hebrews makes the explicit connection between sacrifice and covenant: “For this reason, he [Christ] is the mediator of a new covenant . . . [that] those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance.” Through the final sacrifice of Jesus the high priest, eternal life has been made available to the whole of humanity and the covenant thereby realized beyond the wildest fantasies of Abraham, Moses, Isaiah, or David.
Video reflection by Father Greg Friedman, O.F.M. (U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops): Sunday Reflection.

Archbishop Sheen Quote o' the Day
"The Ascension of Christ is the assurance of our own ascension into Heaven after the Last Judgment. Not yet ascended in body, we nevertheless enjoy the ascension of our minds in union with Him. We find our true home in Heaven."

"Hey-ho, the narwhal!

Narwhal Day XX

"Good news, everyone!" At long last, after a year of sympathizing & preparing, 'tis Narwhal Day once again! Yes, Narwhal Day, that great & glorious day when all & sundry reflect on & sympathize with the narwhal, the very oddest of whales, far-famed for its curious "horn" (in actuality a tusk) that in times past was oft displayed as a unicorn's horn in cabinets of curiosity (Wunderkammer). The existence & persistence o' narwhal remains transcendent proof that truth is indeed stranger than fiction.

The Ancient & Proper Observance of Narwhal Day
First, the wearing of gray attire;
Third, the hearing of "Sympathy for the Narwhal" by D.J. Seaghost, an ally of The Aquabats!;
Third, the swearing of "The Oath of Narwhal Day."

The ancient & proper observance need not be observed in any particular order, though it is probably advisable to don gray attire so as not to observe the ancient & proper observance naked. The wearing of gray is an invitation to others to experience their own sympathy for the narwhal.

The hearing of "Sympathy for the Narwhal" is a communal act, for Narwhal Day is as much a day of celebration as it is as day of sympathizing; the narwhal will frolic & so should we. For many years, this communal celebration was hamstrung by the limited availability of "Sympathy for the Narwhal," but that obstacle has been overcome (see below).

The swearing of the oath is a highly personal act, though it can be done in community; one swears the oath as a jest or a lark only at one's own peril, for one is only as good as one's word. It is in sympathizing with the narwhal that Narwhal Day finds its highest purpose.

The Oath of Narwhal Day
The narwhal is a noble, pitiable creature,
A magnificent, monstrous visage.
An asymmetrical tooth for a horn,
Or sometimes two, or sometimes none,
Half again as long as the beast.

I swear my sympathy for the narwhal.
I will not lie and convince it all is well,
But I will be a friend to the narwhal.
The mocking dolphins and the snobby manatees
Will get their well-earned comeuppance,
And the narwhal will frolic all day.

I dream this dream of the narwhal
And celebrate it in all its oddball, improbable glory,
On this the twentieth Narwhal Day.

Skammentary: I'm principally drawn to "Tijuana Sunrise" by the music—I drink, but never to forget my troubles & to the point of intoxication only in select & very social settings—but the lyrics are interesting in how utterly alien they are to my experience.
"I fell in love down in Mexico,
She took me for everything I had,
Woke up in jail in Rosarito,
Federales took it all,
I'm out of cash about to crash.

"Smash the bottles on the reef,
Wash the dirt off of my feet,

"I've been drinking to forget just how good it was.
