Bonus! Song o' the Day

Cake, "Short Skirt, Long Jacket" from Comfort Eagle (Mike Papa Whiskey)

Commentary:
"I want a girl with a mind like a diamond,
I want a girl who knows what's best,
I want a girl with shoes that cut,
And eyes that burn like cigarettes.
I want a girl with the right allocations,
Who is fast and thorough and sharp as a tack,
She is playing with her jewelry, she is putting up her hair,
She is touring the facility and picking up slack.

"I want a girl with a short skirt and a long jacket.

"I want a girl who gets up early (Gets up early!),
I want a girl who stays up late (Stays up late!),
I want a girl with uninterrupted prosperity (Uninterrupted!),
Who uses a machete to cut through red tape.
With fingernails that shine like justice,
And a voice that is dark like tinted glass,
She is fast and thorough and sharp as a tack,
She's touring the facility and picking up slack.

"I want a girl with a short skirt and a long, long jacket.

"I want a girl with a smooth liquidation (Smooth liquidation!),
I want a girl with good dividends (Good dividends!),
At Citibank we will meet accidentally (Meet accidentally!),
We'll start to talk when she borrows my pen.
She wants a car with a cupholder armrest,
She wants a car that will get her there,
She's changing her name from Kitty to Karen,
She's trading her MG for a white Chrysler LeBaron.

I want a girl with a short skirt and a long jacket."

Scripture of the Day
Mass Readings—Tuesday of the Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time
The Book of Amos, chapter three, verses one thru eight & chapter four, verses eleven & twelve;
Psalm Five (R/. nine[a]), verses four(b), five, & six(a); six(b) & seven; & eight;
The Gospel according to Matthew, chapter eight, verses twenty-three thru twenty-seven.

Commentary: Reflection by Bishop Robert Barron (Word on Fire):
Friends, in this wonderful story of the calming of the storm at sea, we witness some of the spiritual dynamics of fear and trust. The disciples stand symbolically for all of us journeying through life within the narrow confines of the fearful ego.

When they confront the storm and the mighty waves, they are immediately filled with terror. Similarly, when the trials and anxieties of life confront the ego, the first reaction is fear, since there is no power beyond itself upon which it can rely. In the midst of this terrible storm, this inner and outer tension, Jesus symbolizes that divine energy that remains unaffected by the fear-storms generated by the grasping ego.

Continuing to read the story at a spiritual level, we see that it is none other than this divine power that successfully calms the waves: he “rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was great calm.” This beautiful narrative seems to suggest that if we but awaken to the presence of God within us, if we learn to live and to see at a deeper level, if we live in basic trust rather than fear, then we can withstand even the most frightening storms.

Papal Quote o' the Day
"Remember how the first Christians, most of them simple & humble people, suffered the most cruel persecutions, were successful in spreading Christ's message to all parts of the empire. Their only weapons were prayer, the Gospel, & the Cross."
—Pope St. John Paul II the Great (1920-2005, r. 1978-2005; feast: 22 October)
Saint Quote o' the Day
"If only the suffering soul knew how it is loved by God."
—St. Maria Faustyna of the Blessed Sacrament (1905-1938, feast: 5 October)
Mother Teresa Quote o' the Day
"To leave Loreto was my greatest sacrifice, the most difficult thing I have ever done. It was much more difficult than to leave my family & my country. In Loreto I have received my spiritual training."
—St. Teresa of Calcutta, M.C. (1910-1997, feast: 5 September)
Archbishop Sheen Quote o' the Day
"God knows all things, but He still leaves us with freedom. How can God influence you & still leave you free? Well, consider various kinds of influences. First, turn a key in the door. There is the impact of something material on something material & the result is the opening of a door. That is one kind of influence; the influence of a material thing on another material thing. But there is still another kind of influence. In the springtime you plant a seed in the garden. The sun, the moisture, the atmosphere, the chemicals in the earth all begin to influence that seed. It certainly is not the same kind of action as turning a piece of steel in a lock. There are tremendous capacities for growth in that seed, & what most awakens the seed to growth is something invisible, namely, the rays of the sun. Now go a stage higher. Consider the case of a father talking to his son, trying to influence him, for example, to become a doctor. What actually influences the son is some invisible truth, as well as the deep love of the father for the son & the son for the father. Love brings out in the son a free act. The son is not obliged to do exactly what his father wants; he is free to do the contrary. But truth & love have so moved him that he regards what he does as the very perfection of his personality. Later on he may say, 'I owe everything I have to that conversation I had with my father. I really began to discover my true self.'"

The Interrupters, "Outrage" from Fight the Good Fight (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary: This post is all but identical to a post from last month's SKAfter Party, with this slight twist: In your charity, please pray for my parents, who are slavishly devoted to the fearmongers & hucksters of television news. My father watches television every hour that he's awake, most of it Fox News & M.S.N.B.C. My mother is far more like to skip Mass than ever to miss an episode of 60 Minutes.
"Your eyes are glued, glued to the news,
They say there’s two sides, you better choose,
A civil war they want you fighting for,
The ones in power, who always want more.

"They put a mask on to speak their minds,
They need a veil to hide behind,
The mob is howling like wolves trapped in a cage,
This will go down in history as the age
Of outrage! Yeah!
Of outrage! Yeah!

"A house of cards, about to fall,
Where they go one, they go all,
People are hurting, they feel the burden,
They get from learning what's behind the curtain.

"They put a mask on to speak their minds,
They need a veil to hide behind,
The mob is howling like feedback from the stage,
This will go down in history as the age
Of outrage! Yeah!
Of outrage! Yeah!

Yeah!
(This is the age)
Of outrage! Yeah!
(This is the age)
Of outrage! Yeah!"

Saints + Scripture: Solemnity of Saints Peter & Paul

Better Late than Never | Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea máxima culpa!

'Tis the Solemnity of Saints Peter & Paul, Apostles (died circa 64; A.K.A. Simon, Cephas; A.K.A. Saul of Tarsus), first (I) Bishop of Rome (c. 33-64), martyred in the reign of the Roman emperor Nero: Apostles-link Peter & Paul & Wikipedia-link Feast; Apostle-link Peter ūnus, Apostle-link Peter duo, & Wikipedia-link Peter; Apostle-link Paul & Wikipedia-link Paul; Apostles-link & Wikipedia-link Apostles; & Pontifex-link & Wikipedia-link Pontifex.

Commentary: Wayback Machine. St. Peter is the brother of St. Andrew the Apostle [30 November]. Ss. Peter & Paul are the authors of most of the New Testament epistles, too many for me to provide hyperlinks.

Quoth
Minute Meditations from the Popes:
Lord Jesus, You called St. Peter by the Sea of Galilee & St. Paul on the road to Damascus. Call me again & entrust Your sacred mission into my hands.
Scripture of the Day
Mass Readings—Solemnity of Ss. Peter & Paul
The Acts of the Apostles, chapter twelve, verses one thru eleven;
Psalm Thirty-four (R/. five), verses two & three, four & five, six & seven, & eight & nine;
The Second Letter to Timothy, chapter four, verses six, seven, eight, seventeen, & eighteen;
The Gospel according to Matthew, chapter sixteen, verses thirteen thru nineteen.

Commentary: Reflection by Bishop Robert Barron (Word on Fire):
Friends, in today’s Gospel Jesus declares that the gates of hell ("the netherworld") shall not prevail against his Church. And Jesus insists that this society, grounded in Peter’s confession, would constitute an army so powerful that not even the fortified capital of the dark kingdom itself could withstand it.

It is fascinating to me how often we construe this saying of Jesus in precisely the opposite direction, as though the Church is guaranteed safety against the onslaughts of hell. In point of fact, Jesus is suggesting a much more aggressive image: his Church will lay successful siege upon the kingdom of evil, knocking down its gate and breaching its walls.

And notice, too, how Jesus uses the future tense—"I will build my Church." Therefore he cannot be speaking simply of Peter personally but of all those who would participate in his charism throughout the centuries.

The integrity of this
ekklesia will be guaranteed up and down the centuries—not through appeal to popular opinion (as instructive as that might be) nor through the ministrations of an institutional or theological elite (as necessary as those might be) but rather through the pope’s charismatic knowledge of who Jesus is.

Commentary: The Battle of Gibeon (cont'd; 2 Samuel, 2:18-21).

Papal Quote o' the Day
"Neither success or failure must ever cause you to forget your vocation as servant. Allow the Lord to grant growth when & how He chooses. At the same time, imitate the Apostle Paul who knew how to suffer want & to live in abundance, ready for anything."
—Pope St. John Paul II the Great (1920-2005, r. 1978-2005; feast: 22 October)
Saint Quote o' the Day
"Prayer is an aspiration of the heart. It is a simple glance directed to Heaven. It is a cry of gratitude & love in the midst of trial as well as joy."
—St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, Doctor of the Church (1873-1897, feast: 1 October)
Mother Teresa Quote o' the Day
"Should I devote myself to struggle for the justice of tomorrow or even for the justice of today, the most needy people would die right in front of me because they lack a glass of milk… I do not condemn those who struggle for justice. I believe there are different options for the people of God. To me the most important thing is to serve the neediest people."
—St. Teresa of Calcutta, M.C. (1910-1997, feast: 5 September)
Archbishop Sheen Quote o' the Day
"In order to understand the knowledge of God, you must make a distinction between foreknowledge & predetermination. The two are not identical. God does foreknow everything, but He does not predetermine things independent of our will & our merits. Just suppose that you knew the stock market very well. Because of your superior knowledge of business conditions, you said that such & such a stock within six months would be selling ten points higher than it is now. Suppose six months later it actually sold ten points higher. Would you have predetermined & caused it to be ten points higher? Although you foreknew it, other influences were there besides your superior knowledge."

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, "Absolutely Wrong" from While We're at It (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary:
"You were right, I was rude,
I saw the light when it was further reviewed,
Pushed the point past the brink,
Past what's acceptable, now don't you think?…

"Things said while heated might not get repeated,
But then again maybe they might,
I don't care what was said, just get this through your head:
I'm not wrong this time and you,
You are not right,

Skammentary:
"Slap the slogans on the t-shirts, watch them fly out of the shops,
I don't like what I've been thinking and I think it's time it stops,
Mad dash to be the first one and I pray that it's not true
Are you trying to shift the spotlight so the spotlight shines on you?

"This might be of little interest, it could come as no surprise,
The level of the interest I possess,
I listen to the outrage while something inside me dies,
The more I hear, the more I could care less.

"It is stale and it is stagnant,
Every fiber, every fragment,
Every second we waste on it is a shame!
Grab your coat, now you'll be leaving,
Hope that you had a nice evening,
We thank you for your contribution and we're glad you came!

"The cars came off the causeway with a healthy head of steam,

I want to find out that this nightmare here is only a bad dream,
Wake up and the world makes perfect sense…"

Rebel against the kings of Babylon!
Yeah, they got their swords and their spears and their bows and their knives,
But we're fighting with our brothers and sisters for our lives,
Rebel against the kings of Babylon!

"God made man and man made kings,
And the kings rule man and they bring the suffering,
When the people rise up, they see it as defiant,
They want to have control so you can't be self-reliant,
Play your role and don't get out of line,
If you sell your soul they will buy it for a dime,
Then sell it for a dollar, so they can make a profit,
It's a vicious cycle and the only way to stop it:

"Rebel against the kings of Babylon!
Rebel against the kings of Babylon!…"

I'm actively disinterested in reading How to Pray Like Mary (I'll explain once I'm finished, but the title strikes me as disingenuous, never a good sign, but especially not in a religious book); so, taking a cue from Brandon Vogt, I'm alternating How to Pray Like Mary with The Catholic Gentleman, which is divided into short, highly readable chapters. The Queue: Quadragesima's Revenge

During Lent 2019, I lead a video study of No Greater Love: A Biblical Walk through Christ's Passion, presented by Doctor Edward Sri; I decided to read the book of the same name, an optional supplement. Through two Lents (singular: Quadragesima; I don't know the plural) & two Easters (singular: Pascha; I don't know the plural), I failed to finish No Greater Love. Now well into Ordinary Time, I've finally conquered what had become a bette noir. The video study is great; the book is less so.

I need to read How to Pray Like Mary partially so we can do a book review for The Popish Plot, as the book was kindly given to us, for that purpose, by the fine folks @ Ascension Press.

James Horner, "The Year of Jubilee" from Glory: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Mike Papa Whiskey)

Commentary: It is an unspeakable travesty that amidst anti-racism protests in Boston the Memorial to Robert Gould Shaw and the Massachusetts Fifty-Fourth Regiment, men who fought & died to end slavery, was vandalized & defaced with anti-racist slogans. What's next, toppling statues of Frederick Douglass & Harriet Tubman?

Operation AXIOM: Juneteenth
19 June 1865, one hundred fifty-five years ago to the day, the Union Army delivered the news of the Emancipation Proclamation to Texas. All slaves within the Confederacy had been de jure freed by President Lincoln's proclamation of 22 September 1862, effective 1 January 1863, but did not become de facto until the military defeat of the rebels in April 1865. The remoteness of the Texas further delayed the dissemination & implementation of the Emancipation Proclamation. Contrary to ignorant propaganda, "Juneteenth" does not commemorate the end of slavery; that was not achieved throughout the United States 'til the ratification of Amendment XIII to the United States Constitution on 6 December 1865. (Of course, most Americans think Cinco de Mayo mark's Mexico's independence day; so, we are a nation of equal opportunity ignoramuses.) The news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached Texas one hundred fifty-five years ago today, 19 June 1865.

Saints + Scripture — Please Stand By

It's been a month since the post, "Project BLACK MAMBA: Call It a Comeback?" Bonus! Song o' the Day: Peace thru Music

Aloe Blacc, "Love Is the Answer" from Life Your Spirit (Mike Papa Whiskey)

Commentary:
"Friends know where to be found,
To help you when you are down,
But you know you are the one to blame.
You know what's wrong from what's right,
Nobody wins in a fight,
But still we play the game.

"I'm gonna say how I feel,
And what I wanna say is love's the only thing that's real.
I won't tell you what to do,
Just believe that love is the only thing that's real and true…"

American Hi-Fi, "Flavor of the Weak" from American Hi-Fi (Mike Papa Whiskey)

Commentary: This one goes out to all the women I've known who wasted years of their lives on men, on boys unworthy & uncomprehending of their magnificence.
"She paints her nails and she don't know:
He's got her best friend on the phone.
She'll wash her hair,
His dirty clothes are all he gives to her,
And he's got posters on the wall
Of all the girls he wished she was,
And he means everything to her.

"Her boyfriend, he don't know
Anything about her,
He's too stoned, Nintendo,
I wish that I could make her see:
She's just the flavor of the weak.

"It's Friday night and she's all alone,
He's a million miles away,
She's dressed to kill, but the TV's on,
He's connected to the sound,
And he's got pictures on the wall
Of all the girls he's loved before,
And she knows all his favorite songs.

"Her boyfriend, he don't know
Anything about her,
He's too stoned, Nintendo,
I wish that I could make her see:
She's just the flavor of the weak.

"Her boyfriend, he don't know
Anything about her,
He's too stoned, he's too stoned,
He's too stoned, he's too stoned!

"Her boyfriend, he don't know
Anything about her,
He's too stoned, Nintendo,
I wish that I could make her see:
She's just the flavor of the weak.
Yeah, she's the flavor of the weak,
But she makes me weak."

Papal Quote o' the Day
"Man is willed by the Creator as a relational being, as someone who is not sufficient unto himself but, rather, needs relationship, who is supposed to live with another & for another. Only in this relatedness to the other & for the other can he fulfill God’s will."
—Pope Benedict XVI (b. 1927, r. 2005-2013)
Saint Quote o' the Day
"We ought to desire to do great things for the service of God, & not content ourselves with a moderate goodness, but wish, if it were possible, to surpass in sanctity & love even St. Peter & St. Paul."
—St. Philip Neri (1515-1595, feast: 26 May)
Archbishop Sheen Quote o' the Day
"There resides in us the raw material for living with & by the Spirit of God. Why didn't our Lord remain on earth? There could have been many advantages. We could have been thrilled by the majesty of His bearing, awed by His presence & His words. Yet He said: 'It is better for you that I go. For if I go not, the Spirit will not come to you'—the Holy Spirit. The Spirit will not come. If Jesus had remained on earth, He would always be outside of us, like an example to be copied, like a model outside of an artist. If He left & sent His Spirit, then He would be a veritable life to be lived. So Christ sends His Spirit to us."
—Ven. Fulton Sheen (1895-1979)

Dienstag, 9. Juni
Dropkick Murphys, "Gonna be a Blackout Tonight" from Blackout (Mike Papa Whiskey)

Commentary: We lost power for ten hours yesterday, for no apparent reason. No air conditioning, no fans, no way to refill the toilets with water after a single flush, no refrigeration. This is a First World Problem to be sure, but a problem nevertheless.
