Operation AXIOM: Between the Wars
11 November 1921: The third Armistice Day—The American Unknown Soldier was entombed at Arlington National Cemetery, a year after the British Unknown Warrior & the French Soldat Inconnu ("Unknown Soldier"); the Unknown was ferried home from France by Dewey's famous U.S.S. Olympia C-6 & lay in state in the Capitol Rotunda; the current marble superstructure was constructed in 1931.

Bonus! Hallowe'en Song o' the Day

Vic Mizzy, "The Addams Family Theme" from Songs for the Jogging Set (Mike Papa Warlock)

Commentary: The television series The Addams Family & The Munsters both ran for two seasons, from 1964 (September) to 1966 (April & May, respectively). I declare unequivocally, having watched the entire run of both shows this past summer, that The Addams Family is vastly superior to The Munsters.

This is the first repeat Hallowe'en Song o' the Day since this annual R.B.D.S.O.T.D. tradition began in 2010, "
The Addams Family Theme" first appearing in 2012. This project was never intended to be a spooky counterpart to SKApril & by not repeating songs, I've been reglecting some Hallowe'en classics. No decision has been reached, but I'm considering making 2022 a "best of" year, maybe taking one song from each of the preceding playlists. We shall see.

Happy Hallowe'en!

They Might Be Giants, "I Left My Body" from I Like Fun (Mike Papa Wraith)

Commentary:
"I left my body and I went on a journey,
And I forgot where I left my body…"

"I left my body and right away I knew I made a mistake,
I left without my senses and I can't see anything,
Can't see anything.
I'm waiting endlessly on the receptionist at the desk,
I'm searching high and low, but I don't see anyone,
Don't see anyone,
Don't see anyone there."

Bonus! Girl Trouble Song o' the Day

Blink-182, "The Party Song" from Enema of the State (Mike Papa Whiskey)

Commentary:
"And then I saw her standing there
With green eyes and long blonde hair,
She wasn't wearing underwear,
At least I prayed that she might be the one,
Maybe we'd have some fun,
Maybe we'd watch the sun rise,
But that night I learned some girls try too hard!

"Da-na-na, da-na-na, da-na-na,
Some girls try too hard!
Da-na-na, da-na-na, da-na-na,
And some girls try too hard to impress
With the way that they dress,
With those things on their chests,
And the things they suggest…

"So when you see her standing there
With green eyes and long blonde hair,
She won't be wearing underwear,
And you'll discover this girl's not the one
And she'll never be fun,
You should just turn and run
Because you'll find out some girls try too hard!…"

Scripture of the Day
Mass Readings—Feast of Saints Simon & Jude
The Letter to the Ephesians, chapter two, verses nineteen thru twenty-two;
Psalm Nineteen (R/. five [a]), verses two & three & four & five;
The Gospel according to Luke, chapter six, verses twelve thru sixteen.

Commentary: Gospel reflection by Bishop Robert Barron (Word on Fire):
Friends, today’s Gospel recounts Jesus selecting and appointing the Apostles. Bible scholar and theologian N.T. Wright has explained why Jesus commissioned twelve disciples as Apostles.

Wright tells us that when a first-century Jew spoke of the arrival of God’s kingdom, he was taken to mean something very specific. He was announcing that the temple was going to be restored, that the proper worship of Yahweh would obtain, that the enemies of Israel would be dealt with, and that, above all, the tribes of the Lord—and through them, the tribes of the world—would be gathered.

Recall the great vision from the second chapter of Isaiah: "The mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established as the highest mountain…. All nations shall stream toward it." This is why Jesus chose twelve disciples, evocative of the twelve tribes. They would be the prototype and the catalyst for the gathering of Israel and hence the gathering of everyone. They would be the fundamental community and sign of unity.

Operation AXIOM: Destination Moon—The 60th Anniversary of Saturn-Apollo 1
27 October 1961: Saturn-Apollo 1 (Saturn I S.A.-1), the first test flight of a Saturn I rocket, lifted off from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on a suborbital flight; the S-I ("S-One") first stage was only partially fueled to limit the damage in case of a catastrophic failure, & both the S-IV second & S-V third stages were inactive; the only flight anomaly was that the rocket cut off 1.6 seconds early.
Commentary: The development of the Saturn I rocket, underway since 1957, was one of the reasons President Kennedy felt confident enough to issue the challenge—to land men on the Moon & return them safely to Earth before the decade's end—in May 1961, not quite three weeks after Al Shepard became the first American in space during Mercury-Redstone 3 & nine months before John Glenn became the first American to orbit the earth during Mercury-Atlas 6.

Life Is Messy is a self-help book. God is mentioned, but He is peripheral to what Matthew Kelly describes as an essentially human project. This is anathema to the Christian faith, the core of which is that we cannot help ourselves, cannot save ourselves. If we could, we would not need a Savior. The Cursillo Movement exhorts us to read only the best books; a lifespan of a thousand years would not be enough to read all the books one might desire to read, so only reading the best books is an act of self-care & a manifestation of wisdom. To continue reading claptrap like Life Is Messy would be both self-destructive & foolish. Life Is Messy is thus the last of Kelly's books I will read.
Last week, I started co-facilitating a study of The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation at our parish, Saint Matthew. Walking with God, co-written by Bible Timeline creator & presenter Jeff Cavins, follows & expands upon the Bible Timeline's mnemonic device of parsing the story of salvation into twelve color-coded periods, & I thus thought it would be an excellent companion to the study. The Bible Timeline study is scheduled to last until May; so, I ought to be reading Walking with God bit by bit until then.

Centered is a gift I received as a result of signing up for a free month of the Word on Fire Institute. The only extended writing of Bishop Barron's I've read is his Letter to a Suffering Church. I routinely enjoy his weekly sermons, podcasts, films (both the shorter YouTube reaction videos & the longer film series, such as Catholicism & The Pivotal Players), & Gospel reflections, & I have a couple of his books in the queue; so, I'm looking forward to delving into his literary output.

The Rebel Black Dot Hello Rockview Song o' the Day

Less Than Jake, "Al's War" from Hello Rockview (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary: Thus concludes our impromptu fête of the twenty-third anniversary of Hello Rockview, released on 6 October 1998. This is arguably the most seminal album from Less Than Jake, one of my favorite bands, period, & mainstays of my favorite musical subgenre, third-wave ska-punk. I like every song on Hello Rockview. That said, I'm not sure we'll ever repeat this experiment. The burden of the R.B.D.S.O.T.D. is having to choose a song every blessed day, but the joy of the R.B.D.S.O.T.D. is getting to choose a song every blessed day. With this project, I made one choice that perdured for fourteen days, instead of fourteen discrete daily choices. I'm not saying we'll never try this again; like Shakespeare's Caesar, "I am as constant as the Northern Star!" Only time will tell.

Lest I be misunderstood: I have a great affinity for
Hello Rockview & it has been a delight to fête the album's twenty-third anniversary.
"Al said goodbye to his mom and dad
For the first time in his life.
Tonight, he left the house and
Walked to the waiting car outside.
Yeah, somehow he thought they'd never understand
That nothing lasts,
And he just knows that time is just spinning by
And life is passing him by so fast.

"And sometimes I think
I'm the only one who feels like going nowhere's like giving up,
Sometimes I think
I'm the only one who feels like going.

"Al said to me a few days ago
That he just thought for the first time in his life,
He feels that the last few years
Were only a waste of time (only a waste of time)!
Yes, it was always a compromise
Of what he always felt inside.
His declaration
Under the orange street light.

And sometimes I think,
I'm the only one who feels like going nowhere's like giving up.
Sometimes I think
I'm the only one who feels like going.
Yeah-ah!

"He was the one who always did the right things,
He was the one who would always
listen to everything they say.
But today, he's never going back. (Woah-oh-oh)

"And nobody said,
That there would be days like these,
There'd be days like these,
There'd be days…"
