9 February 1920: The Spitsbergen Treaty (later, the Svalbard Treaty) was signed—Formally the "Treaty recognising the sovereignty of Norway over the Archipelago of Spitsbergen," the previously stateless archipelago was ceded to Norway, though all signatory nations possess commercial rights; the Treaty was registered with the League of Nations in October 1920, remaining in force in 2020.
