Operation AXIOM: The Space Age—The 40th Anniversary of S.T.S.-51-I, Part II
31 August-3 September 1985: Van Hoften & Fisher conducted two E.V.A. to capture & repair the non-fuctioning Syncom IV-3 (Leasat-3) satellite, originally deployed during S.T.S.-51-D (April 1985); the spacewalkers had to manually capture the massive Syncom IV-3 & attach a grapple fixture before it could be grasped by the Canadarm; after 112 orbits, the Discovery landed at California's Edwards.Commentary: "Ox" van Hoften & Bill Fisher's wild, largely improvised capture & repair of the Syncom IV-3 satellite looks a lot like "Ox" van Hoften & "Pinky" Nelson's wild, largely improvised capture & repair of the SolarMax satellite during S.T.S.-41-C (April 1984). These were the salad days of the Space Shuttle program, when anything was possible & everything was achievable.
Bonus! Space Age Song o' the Day: S.T.S.-51-I
James Brown, "Living in America" from Rocky IV: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Space Cadet Mike Papa Whiskey)
Commentary: The crew were awakened on 3 September by Linda Ronstadt's song "Living in the USA." Your humble narrator is not familiar with "Living in the USA," but the title did bring to mind "Living in America."Semper exploro.
