7 March 1986: The Challenger crew compartment was located; remains of six of the seven crew were recovered, with the remains of the seventh recovered a month later; the cause of death could not be determined, but analysis indicated the compartment had remained intact until impact with the ocean; ships involved in the recovery included the U.S.S. Preserver & the Deep Sumergence Vessel NR-1.Commentary: Major debris from the Challenger has been discovered as recently as November 2022.
