Rewatching Star Trek (The Original Series, 1966-1969)

Episode o' the Day
"The Cage" (pilot episode; production code: 01; 15 October 1988): Wikipedia-link.

Commentary: "The Cage" was shown to N.B.C. executives in February 1965, many scenes were seen in "The Menagerie" (season one, episodes eleven & twelve) in November 1966, the whole episode was screened in a partially black & white/partially color print at fan conventions through the 1970s & 1980s & was released on V.H.S. & LaserDisc in 1986, & finally the restored full color episode aired on television in October 1988.

"The Cage" is a fantastic episode, a smart story about duty, desire, & reality versus illusion. A wonderful show could have been made about the adventures of Captain Pike & crew, though we are blessed that
Star Trek was given a second pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before," which was picked up & directly led to The Original Series.
