Bonus! Mighty Mighty Rebel Black Dot Song o' the Day

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, "The Impression That I Get" (live) from Live from the Middle East (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary:
"I think we know this fuckin' song."

The Mighty Mighty Rebel Black Dot Song o' the Day

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, "The Impression That I Get" from Let's Face It (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary:
"Have you ever been close to tragedy
Or been close to folks who have?
Have you ever felt the pain so powerful,
So heavy you collapse?

"No? Well.

"I never had to knock on wood,
But I know someone who has,
Which makes me wonder if I could,
It makes me wonder if I—
Never had to knock on wood,
And I'm glad I haven't yet,
Because I'm sure it isn't good,
That's the impression that I get.

"Have you ever felt the odds stacked up so high
You need a strength most don't possess?
Or has it ever come down to do or die?
You've got to rise above the rest.

"No? Well.

"I never had to knock on wood,
But I know someone who has,
It makes me wonder if I could, It makes me wonder if I—
Never had to knock on wood.
And I'm glad I haven't yet,
Because I'm sure it isn't good,
That's the impression that I get.

"I'm not a coward, I've just never been tested.
I'd like to think that if I was I would pass.
Look at the tested and think, there but for the grace go I.
Might be a coward, I'm afraid of what I might find out.

"Never had to knock on wood,
But I know someone who has,
Which makes me wonder if I could,
It makes me wonder if I—
Never had to knock on wood,
And I'm glad I haven't yet,
Because I'm sure it isn't good,
That's the impression that I get.

"Never had to, but I'd better knock on wood,
'Cause I know someone who has,
Which makes me wonder if I could,
It makes me wonder if I—
Never had to, but I'd better knock on wood,
'Cause I'm sure it isn't good,
And I'm glad I haven't yet,
That's the impression that I get."

Bonus! Mighty Mighty Rebel Black Dot Song o' the Day

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, "Decide" from When God Was Great (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary:
"Values have been stripped,
Lids are blown and flipped,
No one is shocked at this point; so, I'm sure you're not surprised.
All circuits shot and shorted,
The truth has been aborted,
If that's not the truth, the truth is it's been compromised.
Don't you find it upsetting?
All the aiding and abetting.
Are we past the point of no return?
Are we still on the brink?
Will you ignore it and dismiss it?
Go for it, be implicit?
Without civility, humility, or the ability to think?

"Decide!

"We have got to decide!
Should we cash in or should we let it ride?
Will this be sanctioned or be nullified?
We have got to decide!
We have got to decide!
We have got to decide!
We have got to decide!"
These United States of America in particular & the West in general stand at a fork in the road. Will we choose to survive & to thrive, or will we continue to commit slow-motion suicide? The
Didache (the "Teaching") is an ancient document, the oldest non-Biblical Christian writing; it opens by presenting a stark but accurate assessment of the world (Didache, 1:1):
There are two ways: one of life and one of death; however, there is a great difference between the two ways.
We have got to decide which way we will follow. For additional food for thought, please read Joshua, 24:15 & Sirach, 15:16-17. Non-Catholic Bibles might not have the Book of Sirach (A.K.A. the Wisdom of Ben Sira, the Book of Ecclesiasticus, et al.), or have it in the back amongst the "apocrypha."

Neither The Mighty Mighty Bosstones nor I are making a political point. What ails us goes far beyond our broken, poisonous politics. We are at a civilizational inflection point, & we have got to decide.

The R.B.D. Song o' the Lord's Day: VIII Sunday in O.T.

Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Audrey Assad, "Death, Be Not Proud" from the Death, Be Not Proud E.P. (Saint Mike Papa Whiskey)

Commentary:
"Death, be not proud, though the whole world fear you:
Mighty and dreadful you may seem,
But death, be not proud, for your pride has failed you,
You will not kill me.
Though you may dwell in plague and poison,
You're a slave to fate and desperate men,
So death, if your sleep be the gates to Heaven,
Why your confidence?
When you will be no more,
You will be no more,
When you will be no more.
Even death will die.
Even death will die.

"Death, be not proud.
Death, be not proud.
Death, be not proud,
Cause even death will die."

The Mighty Mighty Rebel Black Dot Song o' the Day

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, "Closer to Nowhere" from While We're at It (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary: Lead vocalist Dicky Barrett has referred to his own lyrics as "word salad," meaning his lyrics are verbose rather than concise. As my bandmates from Murky Transport Disaster & Real Can of Yams can attest, my own lyrics emulate Barrett's word salads.
"He slammed a deck of cards on the table wicked hard
And said, 'Feel free to count them, if you want.'
I had better things to do, and knew there'd be fifty-two,
I said, 'I'm good thanks,' acting nonchalant.
He went on from there, he waved them in the air,
'A normal deck of playing cards,' he said.
'Pick one,' he barked at me, but do not let me see it.
I didn't pick a card, I left instead.

"Just a little bit closer to nowhere,
A little more somewhere, somehow,
As close as can be, without actually being nowhere right now.
A little bit closer to nowhere.
A little more somewhere. somehow.
As close as can be, without actually being nowhere right now.

"She had a god's eye up on the beautiful bonsai,
She hung the rosary beads around the Buddha's neck,
A dreamcatcher fell and rang a sacred bell
Near the Hindu tapestry that was a wreck.
I heard the bell toll when I struck the singing bowl
With a crystal that I found behind the chimes.
Flipped through a copy of
Eat, Pray, Love,
I didn't judge her, no, I don't sometimes…"

The Mighty Mighty Rebel Black Dot Song o' Yesterday

Donnerstag, 24 Februar
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, "The Route That I Took" from Pin Points and Gin Joints (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary:
"Without really knowing I took all the wrong routes,
The misguided monster in the Doc Marten boots,
In the wrong directions, against all of the grains,
Got off at all the wrong stops, back onto all the wrong trains…

"Without a drop of the sense that God had gave to a stone,
But in my own self defense, well, I was not all alone,
I had the partners and colleagues and the cohorts in crime,
Heaven sent to me, hellbent to be one hell of a time…

"Stay till the end,
Stay till the end,
Glad I took a good look at the route that I took."

Skammentary:
"You made some of my favorite records,
The sweet ,sweet sounds that you cut will last,
Reflect back, I drop a needle on a track,
And I was able to tough it through a very checkered past.

The Mighty Mighty Rebel Black Dot Song o' the Day

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, "I Want My City Back" from A Jackknife to a Swan (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary: I regret that I never made it out to Boston for a Hometown Throwdown, the annual multi-night concert held during the Octave of Christmas, headlined by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones with a who's who of ska-punk & punk bands as the opening acts.
"I want my city back,
Back the way it used to be,
I want it back the way it was,
I looked around and found
This doesn't feel like my hometown,
And I don't like the way it does…"

The Mighty Mighty Rebel Black Dot Song o' the Day

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, "So Sad to Say" from Pay Attention (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary: "So Sad to Say" was the lead single from Pay Attention, the album immediately following the plantium-selling Let's Face It. So day to say, but the fickle public's tastes had already moved on from 1997's Summer of Ska, meaning this was The Mighty Mighty Bosstones' last major-label release.
"I'll let you in on how I'm feeling:
You've got a lot of nerve,
You'll get what you deserve!
Granted, this feeling's unappealing,
I'm bitter, I'll admit,
Now I've got to deal with it.

"Just one more thing, O.K.?
It's all so sad to say.

"It's so sad to say,
What we had has gone away,
You could say it's sad,
Think of what we could have had…"

The Explorers' Club Special

Operation AXIOM: The Space Race—The 60th Anniversary of Mercury-Atlas 6
20 February 1962: Aboard the Mercury capsule Friendship 7, John Glenn (1921-2016), U.S.M.C., became the third American in space &, famously, the first American to orbit the Earth, completing three orbits; a warning light before re-entry was later found to be the result of a faulty sensor; after splashdown & recovery, Glenn embarked on a global publicity tour nicknamed the "Fourth Orbit."

Wayback Machine: № DCCXXXIII, "The Space Race—The 58th Anniversary of Mercury-Atlas 6"
Commentary: Glenn's orbital flight aboard the Friendship 7, after Alan Shepard's & Gus Grissom's suborbital flights in 1961, was a huge step in the United States catching up to (& eventually overtaking) the Soviet Union in the Space Race, which had already flown two orbital missions: Yuri Gagarin & Gherman Titov aboard Vostoks 1 & 2. After Mercury-Atlas 6, Glenn eclipsed Shepard, the first American in space, as a national hero & was so famous that he was not permitted the opportunity to fly again in the follow-on Gemini & Apollo programs.

"Let's try to erase it,
It's time that we face it,
If we don't, then you will?
Shame on us!
Let's try to erase it,
It's time that we face it,
Let's face it:

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, "Hell of a Hat" from Question the Answers (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary:
"Sharpest motherfucker in the joint,
The other motherfuckers stop and point,
The gear you wear seems complete,
Why you gotta pack the heat?

"We question one accessory,
Don't think the piece is necessary,
We agree you're dressed to kill,
We wonder if you will…

The Mighty Mighty Rebel Black Dot Song o' the Day

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, "Think Again" from the Ska-Core, the Devil, and More E.P. (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary: Four of the five songs on the Ska-Core, the Devil, and More E.P. are covers. From the E.P., for February's farewell fête, we've chosen "Simmer Down" (Friday, 4 February), a roots ska song by The Wailers with The Skatalites, & now "Think Again," a hardcore punk song by Minor Threat. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones' early music shows forth more influence by hardcore punk than by Jamaican ska, & their consistent musical ecumenism has been a seminal influence on my own approach to SKApril, etc.
"Ignorance, it set your standards.
Intelligence, that don't work in your brain.
You're an adult, but you act like a child.
Don't even try to explain.
This stupid shit, it's been done.
You think you're the only one?
Think again!…"

I saw the Devil, wingtip shoes on his feet,
Pork pie on his head, he was diggin' the beat,
And the band ripped like demons when he screamed, 'Turn on the heat!'

"Well, the Devil was drinking and dancing up a storm,
The band was so hot my beer got warm,
Just when I thought it would all cool down,
That evil motherfucker screamed, 'Burn this place down!'…"

The Explorers' Club, № DCCCLXVII

Operation AXIOM: Between the Wars
14 February 1922: The Permanent Court of International Justice opened in the Peace Palace, The Hague, the Netherlands—The "World Court" was allowed for under the League of Nations Covenant & created by treaty in December 1920, to arbitrate international disputes that could not be settled diplomacally & to issue advisory opinions on disputes involving the International Labour Organization.
Commentary: The Permanent Court of International Justice (P.C.I.J.) ought not to be confused with the successor International Court of Justice (established 1945 in the United Nations Charter), which took the P.C.I.J.'s place in the Peace Palace & eventually adopted the P.C.I.J.'s seal.

Lest we forget.

Bonus! Rebel Black Dot Song against Valentine's Day

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, "The Magic of Youth" from The Magic of Youth (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary: We do this every year not because I'm opposed to romantic love, to the faithful & fruitful marriage of a man & a woman, but because the cheap, tawdry version of love hawked by the merchants of Valentine's Day is diametrically opposed to genuine romantic love. I revere romantic love & I venerate Saint Valentine, but Valentine's Day as observed in these United States in the late Twentieth Century & early Twenty-first Century is an abomination.

"The Magic of Youth" is more honest than any of our Valentine's Day rituals.
"Do things on shoe strings to make the ends meet,
Cut costs and corners in order to eat,
Low-income housing they couldn't afford,
Bills and collectors that they just ignored.
While the pressures were mounting the tensions would rise,
She had been counting on some of the lies
That he had been telling her being the truth,
The fighting and yelling—the magic of youth!
The magic of youth!

He hit the pipe, she hit the pole,
Stereotypes that were out of control,
Addictions, evictions, mistakes being made,
Health's going south, looks were starting to fade,
And he'd give his right arm if his left one could get
A spike in the vein, then a loose cigarette,
They both lost their dignity, him every tooth,
Classic and tragic—the magic of youth!
The magic of youth!

"The years flew by quickly, that's how they fly by,
Older and sickly and waiting to die,
But they stayed close together, to tell you the truth,
Yelling and fighting (Yelling and fighting),
Classic and tragic (Classic and tragic),
It's all so exciting—the magic of youth!
The magic of youth!
The magic of youth!
The magic of youth!"

Reel Big Fish, "Dateless Losers" from Cheer Up! (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary:
"We are all on our own
With no one by our side,
You are so lucky,
Beautiful and bright.

"All the cool kids go steady,
They're making out at twelve,
We sit in our rooms,
Alone by ourselves.

"It's Friday, no phone call,
Nobody asked us out.

"We are the dateless losers,
Lonely until we die!
So unappreciated,
Why, why, why, why?…"

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Sufjan Stevens, "Eternal Happiness or Woe" from Silver & Gold (Saint Mike Papa Whiskey)

The Mighty Mighty Rebel Black Dot Song o' the Day

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, "M O V E" from When God Was Great (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary: When God Was Great was the end of the road, as it turned out. I hope the cover art was only unintentionally prophetic.

"M O V E" is about the botched response of our institutions—national, state, & local government; the media-industrial complex; public-health experts & university professors; even the Church—to the pandemic & the popular reaction, from across the political spectrum, against those myriad failures.
"'We are all in this together,'
I've never felt so alone,
Birds of a feather, but mister, this bird has flown…

"When we tried to flatten the curve I was ready and willing and able,
But you've got one hell of a nerve because you took it off of the table,
Now, somebody get me an agent again, we are putting it back on the market,
I want an old Mercury pick-up truck with a backwoods dirt driveway to park it.

"We've gotta move (That's true)
Do you approve? (We do)
We gotta move out of the city!
How 'bout the groove? (That's new)
Do you approve? (We do)
It is so good to know that you're with me.

"Instead of telling us who we should hate,
Why don't you give us someone to love?…"

But I caught you kissing the other boy
And lying is just more proof.

(Get out!)
Get out, my baby!
(Get out!)
Get out, my baby girl!

Get out, get out, get out, my little baby,
(Get out!)
'Cause you been messing with the other boys!
(Get out!)…"

The Mighty Mighty Rebel Black Dot Song o' the Day

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, "Absolutely Wrong" from While We're at It (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary:
"You were right, I was rude,
I saw the light when it was further reviewed,
Pushed the point past the brink,
Past what's aceptable, now don't you think?

"You never pulled a punch with me while every shot got fired,
As cheap as they were ,they had to be admired.

"You're absolutely wrong this time,
Could not be any further from the truth,
If we are searching for it,
If not, let me know how come?
You're absolutely wrong, way more,
I'm sure, than you had ever thought,
The truth is what we're searching for,
If I'm wrong, let me know why not?…"

I didn't wanna go to no disco, no, no!
I just wanted you to come over,

But you went out with some dumb jock
And left me alone with my skateboard tonight!…"

The Mighty Mighty Rebel Black Dot Song o' the Day

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, "Sunday Afternoons on Wisdom Ave" from The Magic of Youth (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary: The title "Sunday Afternoons on Wisdom Ave" is pronounced "av," neither "avenue" nor the Latin Ave, though from the lyrical context the title is clearly taken from a road sign abbreviation of Wisdom Avenue into "Wisdom Ave."

MU330, "Favorite Show" from MU330 (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

With too many commercials I put you to sleep,
With too many commercials!…"

The Mighty Mighty Rebel Black Dot Song o' the Day

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, "Sister Mary" from Pin Points and Gin Joints (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary: Pin Points and Gin Joints (2009) was the first post-hiatus studio album, & to the ears of your humble narrator it evinced the beginning of a Golden Age in the long, magnificent career of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. They never again matched the commercial success they had achieved in the 1990s, but, oh, the music—the music!

"You're just a waste of time to me, Katie,
And you're a waste of time and air and space,
And I've been wasting time on you, Katie,
There isn't any time left I can waste…"

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, "Don't Worry Desmond Dekker" from Medium Rare (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary: Medium Rare (2007)—a compilation of previously unleased songs, vinyl B-sides, & a trio of brand-new songs—was released in a time of transition: The Mighty Mighty Bosstones had announced that they were playing the multi-night Christmastime homestand, the Hometown Throwdown, in December 2007, but remained non-commital about returning as a full-time, touring band.

"Don't Worry Desmond Dekker" played a big part in encouraging me to explore the music of Desmond Dekker & ska's Jamaica roots.
"I, I can hear your laughter,
It stays with me after
All this time.
And I, I still got your records,
Clash and The Selecter,
And don't worry, Desmond Dekker's doing fine…"

The Mighty Mighty Rebel Black Dot Song o' the Day

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, "The Old School Off the Bright" from A Jackknife to a Swan (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary: A Jackknife to a Swan (2002) was The Mighty Mighty Bosstones' first album of the third millennium & their last before the band went on hiatus from 2003-2007. That was a very anxious time for ska: a bunch of third-wave bands had abandoned their sound after the "ska bubble" burst (the highpoint being the Summer of Ska, 1997) & many others had broken up or otherwise quit making music. The glimmer of hope was that The Mighty Mighty Bosstones were always clear that they were on hiatus, that unlike now the band had not broken up.

I will not pretend to understand all of the Boston references in "The Old School Off the Bright," but I like it anyway.
"Bring in the skins with the pins and the patches on their flights,
The rovers with the clovers who've spent far too many nights
Out with us till closing time, we hope we're not imposing on you,
Get the crew together—it's the old school off the Bright!

"Flush the boys out of Dot, we're gonna need them there,
And tell the trouble-makers that hang out in Harvard Square,
We need every able asshole, every asshole you can spare,
We're going off the Bright—invite them to this fine affair!

"Tell the Irish in Southie and the South End Puerto Ricans,
The North End Italians and the wind bags up on Beacon Hill,
There will be no tomorrow, it's going down tonight,
So get the crew together—it's the old school off the Bright!

"We want the punks, the drunks, the layabouts, the steady working Joes,
The white collars, the rednecks, and our blueblooded bros.,
The jocks, the preps, the stoners, the homeless, and homeowners,
Every loser, boozer, drug abuser, sharpie, and Two-Toner.
We'll take the Jills and bring on the Jacks
From Forrest Hills all the way to Father Mac's,
The rude girls and the rudies, don't fail, it's your duty, 'cause
Tonight will be the night!
So get the crew together—It's the old school off the Bright!
It's the old school off the Bright!
It's the old school off the Bright!

"Get the crew together—it's the old school off the Bright!"
