Operation AXIOM: The Space Race—The 50th Anniversary of Skylab 2, Part II
7 June 1973: Conrad & Kerwin conducted an E.V.A. to cut free the ensnared solar wing, which sprang into position as designed, flinging both astronauts off Skylab to the end of their tethers; after limping by on power from the Apollo Telescope Mount's solar panels for a fortnight, Skylab now had enough power to begin its full mission of solar & Earth resource observations, plus astro-medical research.
Commentary: It is no exaggeration to say that by deploying the parasol & freeing the remaining solar wing, Conrad, Weitz, & Kerwin saved Skylab. Had the station continued to run on the electrical current from the Apollo Telescope Mount, & continued running down its batteries, the Skylab 3 & Skylab 4 missions would not have been feasible.
