Operation AXIOM: Between the Wars—The Beer Hall Putsch, Part I
8-9 November 1923: Adolf Hitler & a contingent of S.A. "Brownshirts" seized the Bürgerbräukeller beer hall in Munich & took hostage Bavarian Staatskomissar Gustav von Kahr; Hitler declared, "The national revolution has broken out!;" S.A. attempted to seize buildings & weapons caches around Munich, but with no coherent plan; twenty-one souls were lost, while Hitler fled & was later arrested.Commentary: The defeated Nazis later mythologized the Beer Hall Putsch; the fifteen putschists & one innocent bystander killed were regarded as "blood martyrs," though no such honor was accorded to the four Bavarian police officers they killed. The Blutfahne, a Nazi flag stained with the "martyrs'" blood, became a revered object.
Lest we forget.
