"Outside, the sun rose,
And you stayed inside, you kept your eyes closed,
Pulled down the shades on your window,
You decided to hide out from the sunlight,
It's too bright,
Just doesn't sit right
With the way you're feeling today:
You're cloudy and gray. (Hey!)
"You're chasing the sun away! (Hey!)

You're chasing the sun away! (Hey!)
You're chasing the sun!"

9 May 1971: The Mariner-H probe (also known as "Mariner 8") lifted off from Florida's Cape Kennedy Air Force Station atop an Atlas-Centaur rocket; shortly after staging, the Centaur upper stage began to tumble out of control, both the rocket & the probe crashing into the Atlantic Ocean north of Puerto Rico; the cause of the failure was eventually traced to a malfunction in the guidance system.Commentary: Just as the summer of 2020 saw the launch of three robotic missions to Mars—by the United States of America (Mars 2020, Perseverance rover & Ingenuity helicopter), the People's Republic of China (Tianwen-1, Zhurong rover), & the United Arab Emirates (Emirates Mars Mission, Hope orbiter)—so too the May 1971 Mars launch window saw a flurry of activity from the United States & the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, as we shall explore in the weeks ahead.

The Gospel according to John, chapter fifteen, verses nine, ten, & eleven.
Commentary: Easter Gospel reflection by Bishop Robert Barron (Word on Fire):
Friends, the two most important words in our Gospel today are joy and commandments. "I have told you this so that my joy might be in you and your joy might be complete." And, "If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love."Video reflection by Deacon Harold Burke-Sivers (U. S. C. of Catholic Bishops): Easter Reflection.
These are not terms that we readily juxtapose. We usually associate commandments with the carrying out of duty and responsibility, or with moral rectitude, and that normally seems opposed to joy.
However, in Thomas Aquinas’ treatment of human behavior, the first question raised is not about law or virtue, but rather joy. Thomas wonders what the nature of true happiness is. What all of us seek, whether we are young or old, Christian or non-Christian, male or female, rich or poor, is joy.
The whole point of the moral life is to make us happy. So how do we become happy? Thomas’ answer, which is in line with the great tradition, is through the proper ordering of one’s desire, through learning how to desire the right things and in the right way. And that’s precisely what Jesus commands us to do.

Commentary: Shepard's suborbital flight came three weeks—twenty-three days—after Yuri Gagarin's orbital flight (12 April 1961, Vostok 1). Had Shepard's opinion prevailed & he launched atop the Mercury-Redstone Booster Development flight (24 March 1961) that proved the malfunctions of Ham the Astro-Chimp's Mercury 2 flight (31 January 1961) had indeed been corrected, Shepard would have beaten Gagarin into space by three weeks. Either way, though, Shepard's flight would have been suborbital & Gagarin's orbital; the United States would not launch an orbital flight 'til February 1962. That said, Shepard was the pilot of his spacecraft, while Gagarin was a passenger.

The Stars My Destination: Crew-1 Splashdown
In the wee hours of Sunday morning, 2 May, hours before the dawn, the Crew Dragon Resilience splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico, safely returning to Earth the Crew-1 quartet of N.A.S.A. astronauts Mike Hopkins, Victor Glover, & Shannon Walker, & J.A.X.A. astronaut Soichi Noguchi. A night splashdown is not the ideal scenario, but was necessitated by the weather conditions at the recovery zone. The safe return of Crew-1 marks yet another milestone on the return of routine spaceflight to & from the International Space Station from & to the United States.
The Resilience set a new American spacecraft endurance record, spending one hundred sixty-seven days in space, surpassing the previous record of eighty-four days set by the Skylab 4 Apollo module in 1973-1974.

Friends, today we read the wonderful and mysterious passage from the fourteenth chapter of John’s Gospel. The disciples are gathered around Jesus at the Last Supper, abiding in intimacy with him, asking questions and seeking wisdom.Video reflection by Monsignor James Vlaun (U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops): Easter Reflection.
Then listen to Jesus’ words: "If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him." Paul refers to Jesus as the "icon of the invisible God." What both Jesus and Paul are saying is that Jesus’ words are the Father’s words and his deeds are the Father’s deeds.
Philip, one of the first disciples chosen, still doesn’t get this. He says, "Master, show us the Father." What he missed was the humility of the Logos: "The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me is doing his works." Neither the words nor the deeds of Jesus are "his own." They are received from the Father.

"Today God continues to call—you & me—but do we listen?"Saint Quote o' the Day
—St. Teresa of Calcutta, M.C. (1910-1997, feast: 5 September)
"Pay no attention to sufferings or to enjoyment, but give your attention to your beloved God."Archbishop Sheen Quote o' the Day
—St. Paul of the Cross, C.P. (1694-1775, feast:19 October)
"I was talking to a young woman who was in an iron lung for twenty-one years. The only part of her body that she could move was her head. She told me that she was visited the week before by six seminarians. They told her they were about to be ordained priests. She told them, 'I hope you're also going to be ordained victims. Because our Lord was not only a priest, he was a victim; he offered himself for others. So you have to do that.' They replied that the Lord didn't want them to suffer. She said, 'You young men are imposing a tremendous additional penance on me to make you worthy of your priesthood.' She was filling up in her own body the sufferings that were wanting to them. So those of us who have the faith have to begin restoring the idea of reparation."
