The Star My Destination: The Soyuz 11 Disaster

Operation AXIOM: The Space Race—The 52nd Anniversary of Soyuz 11
Fifty-two years ago to the day, 29 June 1971, the Soyuz 11 capsule vented its internal atmosphere into the vacuum of space, asphyxiating to death its crew of three: Commander Georgy Dobrovolsky, Flight Engineer Vladislav Volkov, & Research Engineer Viktor Patsayev. Soyuz 11 had departed the Salyut 1 space station after a three-week residency & was preparing for atmospheric re-entry.
The Soyuz 11 trio were not wearing pressure suits, leaving them defenseless against the sudden capsule depressurization. Cosmonauts had stopped wearing pressure suits, even during launch & re-entry, in order to squeeze more crew into the Voskhod & Soyuz capsules. After the disaster, the Soyuz capsule was redesigned to accommodate a crew of two, wearing pressure suits. The Soyuz 11 trio remain the only humans to have perished in outer space, above the Kármán line (one hundred kilometers/sixty-two miles above mean sea level).
The Soyuz 11 capsule depressurized just prior to atmospheric re-entry, killing its crew of three, 29 June 1971, fifty-two years ago today.

The Stars My Destination: Anniversary Traffic Jam

Recently, "The Explorers' Club" ran into a scheduling buzzsaw with the overlapping fiftieth, sixtieth, & fortieth anniversaries of Skylab 2 (25 May-22 June 1973), Vostok 5 & Vostok 6 (14-19 June 1963), & S.T.S.-7 (18-24 June 1983). Standard protocol is to publish episodes of "The Explorers' Club" no more frequently than every three days.

The compromise schedule I devised was:

13 June 2023: The 60th Anniversary of Vostok 5 & Vostok 6, Part I (14-16 June 1963)

16 June 2023: The 60th Anniversary of Vostok 5 & Vostok 6, Part II (17-19 June 1963)

19 June 2023: The 40th Anniversary of S.T.S.-7, Part I (18 June 1983)

22 June 2023: The 50th Anniversary of Skylab 2, Part III (19-22 June 1973)

25 June 2023: The 40th Anniversary of S.T.S.-7, Part II (19-24 June 1983)

Operation AXIOM: The Space Age—The 40th Anniversary of S.T.S.-7, Part II
19-24 June 1983: Crippen, Hauck, Fabian, Ride, & Thagard deployed two communications satellites; deployed & recovered the Shuttle pallet satellite (S.P.A.S.-1), which photographed the Orbiter among other experiments; & conducted medical tests on space adaptation syndrome; additional payloads included seven Getaway Specials; after 97 orbits, the Challenger landed at California's Edwards.
Commentary: I am delighted that the crew maneuvered the Canadarm to form the numeral seven (above, the topmost photo), as seen on the S.T.S.-7 mission patch.

S.T.S.-7 was intended to be the first Orbiter landing at the new Shuttle Landing Facility at Kennedy Space Center, but unacceptable weather over Florida diverted the
Challenger to reliable old Edwards.

Operation AXIOM: The Space Race—The 50th Anniversary of Skylab 2, Part III
19-22 June 1973: Conrad & Weitz conducted an E.V.A. to retrieve film canisters from the Apollo Telescope Mount; the trio set a new spaceflight endurance record—twenty-eight days; the unnamed Command Module splashed down in the Pacific & was recovered by the U.S.S. Ticonderoga; Conrad especially had exercised furiously in order to walk unaided across the Ticonderoga's deck, & did so.
Commentary: The twenty-eight days of Skylab 2 surpassed the previous endurance record, twenty-three days, set by the doomed Soyuz 11 crew aboard the Salyut 1 space station (1971).

The Hippos, "Lost It" from Heads Are Gonna Roll (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary: I had the lyrics for another song running through my head, more of a reggae song, but I was also hankering for big, brassy ska-punk; thus, "Lost It." I started listening to the other song to post it as the R.B.D.S.O.T.D., but I just wasn't feeling it. It might be a Bonus! later.
"I can't believe a word she says to me,
It brings me closer to insanity,
Why can't she just understand,
The things she says could kill a man?…"

Commentary: S.T.S.-7 was the second flight of the Challenger OV-099. S.T.S.-7's crew of five set a new record for the number of persons in space launched aboard a single craft, surpassing the four from S.T.S.-5.

The Stars My Destination: The Vostok Program

The Space Race
Comparisons between the Soviet Union's Vostok program & the United States's Project Mercury are natural, inevitable, & entirely appropriate, as neither would have happened without the other. There were six Vostok missions carrying six cosmonauts from April 1961-June 1963; there were six Mercury missions carrying six astronauts from May 1961-May 1963. All six of these Vostok flights were orbital; two of the Mercury flights were suborbital (using the Redstone launch vehicle), while four were orbital (using the Atlas launch vehicle).

The Soviets continued to lead the Space Race, as they had since the launch of Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite, in October 1957: Vostok 1 was an orbital flight (April 1961), while the first orbital Mercury flight was the third, Mercury-Atlas 6 (February 1962). Vostok 2 lasted a full day (August 1961), while the first Mercury flight to last a full day was the sixth & last, Mercury-Atlas 9 (May 1963). Some Vostok achievements would never be equalled by Mercury, but only by the follow-on Gemini program. Vostok 3 & Vostok 4 was the first flight of two spacecraft (August 1962), a feat N.A.S.A. would not equal until Gemini VII & Gemini VI-A (December 1965). Vostok 5 (June 1963) set an endurance record of five days that would not be surpassed until the eight days of Gemini V (August 1965); Vostok 5's cosmonaut continues to hold the world record for longest solo spaceflight.

A critical difference between the Soviet & American space programs is that Mercury's successes & failures were conducted in public, while Vostok's successes were carefully curated & its failures were hidden for decades, e.g., the death of Valentin Bondarenko. The Soviets also exaggerated their accomplishments to the point of lying: The official T.A.S.S. news agency reported that Vostok 3 had changed its orbital trajectory to rendezvous with Vostok 4, though the Vostok capsule was not capable of such orbital maneuvers & the relatively close proximity of the two spacecraft was due to the precision of their launches.

All that said, the achievements of the Vostok program cannot be denied—Yuri Gagarin was the first man in space—& should be celebrated by all Mankind.

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, "I Don't Want to Be You" from When God Was Great (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary: A few months ago, while I was driving & spied something I disliked, the thought went through my head, "There's a special place in Hell for people who—" when all of a sudden, from very much outside myself, the thought was completed, "who say there's a special place in Hell for others." I knew this was God the Holy Ghost, because I was cut to the heart like the Jerusalem crowds on Pentecost who heard Saint Peter accuse them of crucifying the Christ. There's a Popish Plot episode in there, when I get around to organizing my thoughts.

"I Don't Want to Be You" is the R.B.D.S.O.T.D. because the repetitive part of the chorus was running through my head, not the unfortunate last line.
"But there's a place for you,
There's a place for you,
There's a place for you,
There's a place for you,
A special place in Hell waiting for you…"
"I Don't Want to Be You" is the last song on the last album The Mighty Mighty Bosstones' released before their January 2022 breakup. Not the ideal last word after a brilliant, nearly forty-year tenure as a band. Let us all, each & every one, be mindful of our tongues, our pens, & keyboards, because none of us knows when our last words will be uttered, written, or typed.

Operation AXIOM: The Space Race—The 60th Anniversary of Vostok 5 & Vostok 6, Part II
17-19 June 1963: Tereshkova was "evasive" in her communications with mission control about her physical condition; she was the only Vostok cosmonaut whose in-flight performance was rated "fair" rather than "outstanding;" Bykovsky set a new endurance record: five days in orbit; both cosmonauts ejected from their respective capsules after re-entry & parachuted to earth, her hours before him.
Commentary: Bykovsky stills holds the record for the longest solo spaceflight; he would fly two Soyuz missions in the 1970s. Tereshkova would never return to space, but became a celebrity & a politician.

Operation AXIOM: The Space Race—The 60th Anniversary of Vostok 5 & Vostok 6, Part I
14-16 June 1963: Vostok 5 lifted off from the Kazakh S.S.R.'s Baikonur Cosmodrome, carrying Pilot Valery Bykovsky aboard a Vostok 3KA capsule atop a Vostok-K rocket; two days later, Vostok 6 lifted off, carrying Pilot Valentina Tereshkova; Bykovsky was meant to orbit for a record eight days; Soviet propaganda made much of Tereshkova, a skydiver rather than a pilot, being the first woman in space.
Commentary: We here at "The Explorers' Club" are not sexist, & so we refuse to judge Tereshkova's performance as a cosmonaut by the bigotry of low expectations, as you'll read about in "The 60th Anniversary of Vostok 5 & Vostok 6, Part II." Soviet boasts of sex equality would prove hollow: the next female cosmonaut, Svetlana Savitskaya, would not fly until 1982, nineteen years after Vostok 6, & even then only to preempt the flight of the first female American astronaut, Sally Ride aboard the Challenger during 1983's S.T.S.-7.
