9 November 1918: Wilhelm II abdicated—de facto, if not de jure—as Emperor of Germany (Kaiser, "Caesar") & King of Prussia (König); Friedrich Ebert, chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, became Chancellor; against Ebert's wishes, Philipp Scheidemann proclaimed Germany a republic; the next day, the last Hohenzollern crossed into permanent exile in The Netherlands.
