Operation AXIOM: Destination Moon—The 50th Anniversary of Apollo 12, Part I
14 November 1969: Apollo 12 lifted off from Florida's Kennedy Space Center, carrying Commander Charles "Pete" Conrad, Command Module Pilot Richard Gordon, & Lunar Module Pilot Alan Bean aboard the Command & Service Module Yankee Clipper atop a Saturn V rocket also carrying the Lunar Module Intrepid; Apollo 12 was twice struck by lightning during the launch, but carried on.

Commentary: It was for quick thinking during Apollo 12's lighting strike-induced telemetry system malfunctions, quick thinking that prevented the mission from being aborted, that N.A.S.A. flight controller John Aaron earned his reputation as a "steely-eyed missile man."
