13 July 1920: Merian C. Cooper was shot down & taken P.O.W. by the Red Army—A veteran of the United States Army Air Service during the World War & later famous as the director & producer of King Kong, Cooper was serving in the Kościuszko Squadron (the Polish 7th Air Escadrille), a unit of mostly American pilots flying for Poland; he was a P.O.W. for nine months before escaping into Latvia.
