Bonus! Song o' the Day

Dan Potthast, "Same Page" from Eyeballs (Mike Papa Whiskey)

Commentary:
"We're on the same page,
We're on the same page,
It's good to know
We're on the same page,
We're on the same page,
We're on the same page.

"You know I've been hurt,
I know you've been, too,
You look out for me, I look out for you.
We stand together
And take things slow,
Pretend not to fall 'cause we're taking it slow.

"We're on the same page,
We're on the same page,
It's good to know
We're on the same page,
We're on the same page,
We're on the same—
"We're on the same page,
We're on the same page,
It's good to know
We're on the same page."

Commentary:
"I am the traveller, third-class,
My name is, Hello, how are you?
Is this seat taken? you may ask
Of the traveller in third class…

"The thing I've seen
And in between
Eleven months of the year
On the road with you, my dear:
Girls in white, men in black,
Dogs and cats, brass and tack,
Golden teeth, crooked track,
And then I take the train right back…

"The fields of grain
In snow and rain,
Eleven months of the year,
In the train across Ukraine:
Girls in black, men in white,
Children yell, women fight,
Golden dreams, dimming light,
Then I take the train all night…"

Operation AXIOM: Destination Moon—The 51st Anniversary of Luna 16
12-24 September 1970: The Luna 16 probe lifted off from the Kazakh S.S.R.'s Baikonur Cosmodrome atop a Proton-K rocket; the probe landed on the Mare Fecunditatis, collected soil samples, & sealed those samples inside an ascent stage, which lifted off from the Moon & landed back in the Kazakh S.S.R.; this was Mankind's third lunar sample-return mission, the Soviets' first, & the first robotic one.
Commentary: Luna 16 returned one hundred one grams (101 g) of lunar soil samples. By contrast, Apollo 11 returned in excess of twenty-one kilograms (21.55 kg) & Apollo 12 returned in excess of thirty-four kilograms (34.35 kg) of lunar samples. That's almost fifty six kilograms (55.9 kg) versus one hundred one grams (101 g), giving crewed missions a massive advantage over robotic probes.

Scripture of the Day
Mass Readings—Thursday of the Twenty-fifth Week in Ordinary Time
The Book of Haggai, chapter one, verses one thru eight;
Psalm One Hundred Forty-nine (R/. cf. four[a]), verses one(b) & two; three & four; & five, six(a), & nine(b);
The Gospel according to Luke, chapter nine, verses seven, eight, & nine.

Commentary: Gospel reflection by Bishop Robert Barron (Word on Fire):
Friends, in today’s Gospel, we see Herod interested in and perplexed by Jesus. Political rulers don’t come across well in the New Testament. In Luke’s Christmas account, Caesar Augustus is compared very unfavorably to the Christ child. And in Matthew’s account, that child is hunted down by the desperate Herod. Later, Herod’s son persecutes John the Baptist and Jesus himself. More to it, the Jewish authorities are seen in all of the Gospels as corrupt.

And Pontius Pilate is a typical Roman governor: efficient, concerned for order, brutal. Like the other rulers of the time, he perceives Jesus, quite correctly, as a threat. “So you are a king?” Pilate asks. Jesus says, “My kingdom does not belong to this world.”

This does not mean that Jesus is unconcerned for the realities of politics, with the very “this-worldly” concerns of justice, peace, and right order. When he speaks of his kingdom not belonging to the “world,” he shades the negative side of that term. The “world” is the realm of sin, selfishness, hatred, violence. What he is saying is that his way of ordering things is not typical of worldly powers like Pilate, Caesar, and Herod.

Mass Readings—Memorial of Saint Pius of Pietrelcina
The Letter to the Galatians, chapter two, verses nineteen & twenty;
Psalm One Hundred Twenty-eight (R/. one), verses one & two, three, & four & five;
The Gospel according to Matthew, chapter sixteen, verses Z.

Papal Quote o' the Day
"Every burden is light when we are united to Christ, when it is He Who gives us the strength & breath to go on walking. On the other hand, how heavy the burden is when it is carried without Christ!"
—Pope St. John Paul II the Great (1920-2005, r. 1978-2005; feast: 22 October)
Saint Quote o' the Day
"If we only knew how God regards this Sacrifice, we would risk our lives to be present at a single Mass."
—Saint Pius of Pietrelcina, O.F.M. Cap. (1887-1968, feast: 23 September)
Mother Teresa Quote o' the Day
"Money? I never give it a thought. It always comes. We work for Jesus. It is His work & He will provide. He has always taken care of us. If He wants something to be done, He will give us the means. If He does not provide us with the means, then it shows that He doesn't want that particular work. So, I forget about it."
—Saint Teresa of Calcutta, M.C. (1910-1997, feast: 5 September)
Archbishop Sheen Quote o' the Day
"Evil is thus a kind of parasite on goodness. If there were no good by which to measure things, evil could not exist. Men sometimes forget this, & say, there is so much evil in the world that there cannot be a God. They are forgetting that, if there were no God, they would have no way of distinguishing evil from goodness. The very concept of evil admits & recognizes a Standard, a Whole, a Rule, an Order. Nobody would say that his automobile was out of order if he did not have a conception of how an automobile ought to run."

The Explorers' Club, № DCCCXLI

Operation AXIOM: The Space Age—The 45th Anniversary of the Space Shuttle Enterprise
17 September 1976: The Space Shuttle Enterprise OV-101 rolled out of the North American Rockwell factory in Palmdale, California; she was used for the Approach & Landing Tests (1977) & the Mated Vertical Ground Vibration Tests (1978), et al.; the Enterprise was originally intended to be converted into a functional Orbiter, but this was later discovered to be cost prohibitive & she never flew in space.
Commentary: The Enterprise was originally named the Constitution; 17 September is Constitution Day, a holiday commemorating the signing of the United States Constitution on 17 September 1787. A letter-writing campaign by nerds known as "Trekkies" resulting in President Gerald Ford directing N.A.S.A. to rename the OV-101 Enterprise. I am a Trekkie & yet I dislike this decision for two reasons: One, it strikes me as awfully unpatriotic, especially in the Bicentennial Year, to prize honoring a fictional starship over honoring the Constitution; & two, the Enterprise never flew in space, but because the name had already been used, there was no possibility of pressuring N.A.S.A. into naming a later spaceflight capable Orbiter Enterprise.

Also, 17 September is Constitution Day, a fine day to roll out a craft named
Constitution, but once the Enterprise was renamed, she ought to have rolled out on 8 September 1976, the tenth anniversary of the debut of "The Man Trap," the first televised episode of Star Trek.

It's kind of wild to think that only ten years passed between Pete Conrad's & Dick Gordon's Gemini XI flight & the rollout of the first Space Shuttle. Sure, the Shuttle wouldn't actually fly for another five years, not 'til 1981, but still, only ten years between a two-man capsule that was originally Mercury Mk. II & the gargantuan spaceplane that would define American crewed spaceflight for three decades.

Saints + Scripture: XXV Sunday in Ordinary Time

Simplex Edition | Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea máxima culpa!

'Tis the Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Tempus per annum, "time through the year"): Wikipedia-link.

Scripture of the Week
Mass Readings—Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Book of Wisdom, chapter two, verses twelve & seventeen thru twenty;
Psalm Fifty-four (R/. six[b]), verses three & four, five, & six & eight;
The Letter of James, chapter three, verse sixteen thru chapter four, verse three;
The Gospel according to Mark, chapter nine, verses thirty thru thirty-seven.

Commentary: Gospel reflection by Bishop Robert Barron (Word on Fire):
Friends, in today’s Gospel, Jesus presents a child as the model for his disciples who want to be the most important. Jesus lays out for his disciples what is going to happen to him in Jerusalem, how he will be rejected, tortured, and killed. Oblivious to this, the disciples are discussing who among them is the most important. For Jesus, the path to greatness lies on the road to Calvary, to self-forgetting love; for the disciples—and for most people of most ages—it lies along the road to ego inflation.

What is the antidote? A child is proposed as a kind of living icon to these ambitious Apostles. We notice first how Jesus physically identifies with the child, sitting down at his level and placing his arms around him. It is as though he is saying that he himself is like a child. How so? Children don’t know how to dissemble, how to be one way and act another. They are what they are; they act in accordance with their deepest nature.

Why was this story of Jesus’ identification with children preserved by all of the synoptic Gospels? Somehow it gets close to the heart of Jesus’ life and message.

Commentary: In most of these United States, the Feast of Saint Matthew, Apostle & Evangelist will be observed on Tuesday, 21 September. However, because my parish, Saint Matthew, is under the patronage of the Apostle & Evangelist, our pastor transferred the observance—also raised from a Feast to a Solemnity—to this Sunday so that more parishioners could enjoy our parish patronal feast.

Scripture of the Day
Mass Readings—Wednesday of the Twenty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time
The First Letter to Timothy, chapter three, verses fourteen, fifteen, & sixteen;
Psalm Psalm One Hundred Eleven (R/. two), verses one & two, three & four, & five & six;
Sequence Stabat Mater;
The Gospel according to John, chapter nineteen, verses twenty-five, twenty-six, & twenty-seven;
or, the Gospel according to Luke, chapter two, verses thirty-three, thirty-four, & thirty-five.

Commentary: Gospel reflection by Bishop Robert Barron (Word on Fire):
Friends, we hear in today’s Gospel that, as he was dying on the cross, Jesus looked to his mother and the disciple whom he loved, and he said to Mary, “Woman, behold, your son,” and then to John, “Behold, your mother.”

We are told that “from that hour the disciple took her into his home.” This text supports an ancient tradition that the Apostle John would have taken Mary with him when he traveled to Ephesus in Asia Minor and that both ended their days in that city. Indeed, on the top of a high hill overlooking the Aegean Sea, just outside of Ephesus, there is a modest dwelling that tradition holds to be the house of Mary.

Immaculate Mary, the Mother of God, assumed body and soul into heaven, is not of merely historical or theoretical interest, nor is she simply a spiritual exemplar. Instead, as “Queen of all the saints” (another of her titles), Mary is an ongoing presence, an actor in the life of the Church.

In entrusting Mary to John, Jesus was, in a real sense, entrusting Mary to all those who would be friends of Jesus down through the ages.

Mother Teresa Quote o' the Day
"You can pray while you work. Work doesn't stop prayer & prayer doesn't stop work. It requires only that small raising of the mind to Him: I love You, God; I trust You; I believe in You; I need You now. Small things like that. These are wonderful ways to pray & wonderful prayers."

Archbishop Sheen Quote o' the Day
"The more He loved those for whom He was the ransom, the more His anguish would increase, as it is the faults of friends rather than enemies with most disturb hearts!"
—Venerable Fulton Sheen (1895-1979)
Bonus! Archbishop Sheen Quote o' the Day
"Something that has particularly characterized our age is what might be called 'de-eucharistization', a decline in the love of the Eucharist. It started when some theologians, completely misunderstanding the Vatican Council, felt that there was no such thing as the presence of Christ in the Sacrament & even cast some doubt on the value of it. So we suffer from what the whole world is suffering. St. Paul calls it a want of feeling. Sociologists tell us that family life & relationships between people have very much degenerated. There is a want of sensitivity & delicacy toward one another. Maybe the grossness of our carnal age has made us put less stress upon those common courtesies & urbanities which make up life. Little affection is shown between husband & wife, between mother & children, or between father & children. I mean a show of affection; there is love in providing for them, but the manifestation of love has gone into decline. And it leads to a decline in the spiritual order. We have become poor lovers of God. We are not sensitive & responsive."
—Venerable Fulton Sheen (1895-1979)
