4 July 1982: Mattingly & Hartsfield deployed a classified U.S. Air Force payload & conducted medical & scientific experiements; the Columbia landed on a concrete runway at California's Edwards A.F.B., whereas S.T.S.-1, -2, & -3 had landed on dry lake beds; President & Mrs. Reagan greeted Mattingly & Hartsfield & declared the Space Shuttle "operational," as the new Challenger was flown overhead.
