6 September 1522: The carrack Victoria completed the first circumnavigation of the Earth, 18 men arriving at Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Spain under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano; 270 men aboard five ships had departed on 20 September 1519 under Ferdinand Magellan; one ship turned back & three were wrecked or scuttled during the voyage; Magellan died in battle in the Philippines.
