Operation AXIOM: The Submarines of 1968, Part III
8 March 1968: The Wreck of the K-129 (722)—The Soviet submarine K-129 disappeared in the Pacific Ocean, with ninety-eight souls aboard; search & rescue efforts were not launched for nearly a fortnight, until the crew had missed two scheduled radio check-ins; the U.S. Navy secretly located the shipwreck in August 1968, hundreds of miles away from the waters the Soviet Navy had searched.Commentary: The K-129 disappeared less than two months after the Israeli submarine Dakar & the French submarine Minerve both disappeared in the Mediterranean Sea.
Requiescant in pace.
