The Rebel Black Dot Song o' the Day

The Phenomenauts, "She'll Launch" from For All Mankind (Space Cadet Mike Papa Whiskey)

Commentary:
"She's got long black hair
And a laser eye,
She's got a laser gun
On one of her thighs…

"She will go on adventure,
She will want to be free,
I'm a guy that can handle that,
A statistic anomaly.

"(She'll launch) I'm sad,
(She'll land) I know that she is still my friend,
(She'll land) I'm glad,
(She'll launch) I know that she'll be back again…"
Operation AXIOM
Thirty-seven years ago to the day, 18 June 1983, Sally Ride became the first American woman in space (the third woman overall), when she launched with four other astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger for S.T.S.-7. We here @ The Secret Base cover S.T.S.-7 in greater detail in a future episode of "The Explorers' Club." Sally Ride became the first American woman in space, inspiring a generation of girls to pursue careers in science, thirty-seven years ago today, 18 June 1983.

Saints + Scripture — Please Stand By

It's been a month since the post, "Project BLACK MAMBA: Call It a Comeback?" (Wayback Machine) & the answer to that question is, thus far, a resounding "No." I aim to rectify that, but the proof will be in the pudding, so to speak. I'm trying to strike the right balance between being patient with myself, which several priests have counseled me to do in confession, & holding myself to a high-yet-still-achievable standard. Please stand by.

Operation ÖSTERREICH: Post-Quarantine — Stand By

Weekly Wednesday Weigh-in
Last weigh-in: 350.4 lbs
This weigh-in: [Please Stand By]
Difference: [Please Stand By]

The bathroom scale is provided wildly inconsistent results, varying by nearly four pounds (4 lbs.) from one measurement to the next. Replacing the batteries did not remedy the inconsistency. I'm willing to face bad news—the prospect of a massive weekly weight gain—but there's no point if I cannot have confidence in the measurements. The Weekly Wednesday Weigh-in cannot resume 'til a replacement has been acquired.

The Wombats, "Girls/Fast Cars" from The Wombats Proudly Present This Modern Glitch (Mike Papa Whiskey)

Commentary:
"I'm a man of simple tastes,
No whiskey or caviar,
And what I feel is what I say,
I'm not trying to be smart.

"I like girls, girls and fast cars,
You too will feel this shallow
When one melts your little heart…

"I like girls, girls and fast cars,
It's cheap and it's pathetic,
But you can't hate me just because…"

13-14 June 1970: The 38th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans—The № 23 Porsche 917K of Hans Herrmann & Richard Attwood won the "Grand Prix of Endurance & Efficiency" & Porsche claimed all three spots on the overall podium*; heavy rain throughout contributed to only sixteen cars finishing the race; Steve McQueen's film Le Mans (1971) was partially filmed on track during the actual race.

Commentary: *Porsche holds the record among manufacturers with nineteen overall Le Mans victories & Porsche only knows how many class wins by each years' fleet of 911s.

Michel Legrand, "Le Mans: The Race, First Laps" from Le Mans/The Hunter (Bendes originales de films) (Mike Papa Whiskey)

Commentary: Today would normally be the day of the running of the Grand Prix of Endurance & Efficiency, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but the race has been rescheduled to the fall due to the ongoing fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic & the attendant panic. In lieu of the great race, the World Endurance Championship is conducting a twenty-four-hour e-sports race (a video game) called the "24 Hours of Le Mans Virtual." Merci mais non. You know what's wrong from what's right,
Nobody wins in a fight,
But still we play the game.

American Hi-Fi, "Flavor of the Weak" from American Hi-Fi (Mike Papa Whiskey)

Commentary: This one goes out to all the women I've known who wasted years of their lives on men, on boys unworthy & uncomprehending of their magnificence.
"She paints her nails and she don't know:
He's got her best friend on the phone.
She'll wash her hair,
His dirty clothes are all he gives to her,
And he's got posters on the wall
Of all the girls he wished she was,
And he means everything to her.

"Her boyfriend, he don't know
Anything about her,
He's too stoned, Nintendo,
I wish that I could make her see:
She's just the flavor of the weak.

"It's Friday night and she's all alone,
He's a million miles away,
She's dressed to kill, but the TV's on,
He's connected to the sound,
And he's got pictures on the wall
Of all the girls he's loved before,
And she knows all his favorite songs.

"Her boyfriend, he don't know
Anything about her,
He's too stoned, Nintendo,
I wish that I could make her see:
She's just the flavor of the weak.

"Her boyfriend, he don't know
Anything about her,
He's too stoned, he's too stoned,
He's too stoned, he's too stoned!

"Her boyfriend, he don't know
Anything about her,
He's too stoned, Nintendo,
I wish that I could make her see:
She's just the flavor of the weak.
Yeah, she's the flavor of the weak,
But she makes me weak."

'Tis the Memorial of Saint Barnabas, Apostle.

Papal Quote o' the Day
"Man is willed by the Creator as a relational being, as someone who is not sufficient unto himself but, rather, needs relationship, who is supposed to live with another & for another. Only in this relatedness to the other & for the other can he fulfill God’s will."
—Pope Benedict XVI (b. 1927, r. 2005-2013)
Saint Quote o' the Day
"We ought to desire to do great things for the service of God, & not content ourselves with a moderate goodness, but wish, if it were possible, to surpass in sanctity & love even St. Peter & St. Paul."
—St. Philip Neri (1515-1595, feast: 26 May)
Archbishop Sheen Quote o' the Day
"There resides in us the raw material for living with & by the Spirit of God. Why didn't our Lord remain on earth? There could have been many advantages. We could have been thrilled by the majesty of His bearing, awed by His presence & His words. Yet He said: 'It is better for you that I go. For if I go not, the Spirit will not come to you'—the Holy Spirit. The Spirit will not come. If Jesus had remained on earth, He would always be outside of us, like an example to be copied, like a model outside of an artist. If He left & sent His Spirit, then He would be a veritable life to be lived. So Christ sends His Spirit to us."
—Ven. Fulton Sheen (1895-1979)

The Aquabats!, "Sequence Erase!" from The Aquabats! vs. the Floating Eye of Death! and Other Amazing Adventures, Vol. 1 (Captain Thumbs Up!)

Commentary: "Sequence Erase!" is the first song on Floating Eye of Death!, & thus it has a certain unresolved quality.
"When time scrambles and it's gone away,
Can you stop to start again?
No time.

"No one will laugh when it strikes,
This diabolic plan to break up all order.
And who holds the key to stop the countdown
Of the global secret combination?

"These heroes changing,
Recognize we've been so undermined
Danger, waking, blind,
But the hands on the clock
Give no room, no thought,
No words (No words!),
No mind (No mind!),
No hate (No hate!),
Sequence Erase, no time (No time!)

"Prolong the wait with hopeless information,
Time and space erase no indication,
Knife in the back, I stagger to the phone,
Who can I call? I'm now complete alone.

"These heroes changing,
Recognize we've been so undermined
Danger, waking, blind,
But the hands on the clock
Give no room, no thought,
No words (No words!),
No mind (No mind!),
No hate (No hate!),
Sequence Erase, no time (No time!)"

The Stars My Destination

Code Name: CHAOS — That's NumberWang!
Arabic numerals were used for every phase of Project Mercury. Mercury 3 was Alan Shepard's flight aboard the Freedom 7 & Mercury 6 was John Glenn's flight aboard the Friendship 7. (The first manned flight was Mercury 3? The third manned flight was Mercury 6? Those numbers don't add up. Mercury 1 was an uncrewed test flight of the hardware, while Mercurys 2 & 5 were crewed by chimpanzees, Ham & Enos, respectively.) This schema continued into Project Gemini, Gemini 1 & Gemini 2 being unmanned test flights & Gemini 3 Gus Grissom & John Young's flight aboard the Molly Brown.

However, from Gemini IV inward the spacecraft had no names but the missions were officially designated with Roman numerals, IV instead of 4 through XII instead of 12. This was to add the ever-elusive air of gravitas to the enterprise. Gravitas is not the strong suite of the Americans. We have no hereditary aristocracy & so all-pervasive is the myth of egalitarianism that even billionaires regularly appear in public wearing blue jeans & the wealthy often self-identify as "middle class." Astronauts—highly educated men in a serious, life & death profession but as all-American as apple pie—left to their own devices named their spacecraft after Broadway musicals (The Unsinkable Molly Brown) & children's cartoons (the Apollo 16 Command Module Casper was named after Casper the Friendly Ghost). So, N.A.S.A. chose Roman numerals to lend some dignity to the American half of the Space Race. We here at The Secret Base share N.A.S.A.'s fondness for Roman numerals, the episode of "The Explorers' Club" dedicated to Gemini IV being № DCCLIII instead of № 753, agreeing with old Hollywood that Roman numerals add an air of dignity & permanence.
"Dignity, always dignity."
—Gene Kelly, Singin' in the Rain
Alas, the mission patches were inconsistent from the jump, the retroactive patches for Gemini 3 & Gemini IV not bearing any numerals at all & the patches for Gemini V & Gemini VI-A bearing Arabic numerals. The inconsistency persisted into Project Apollo. The mission patches for Apollo 1, Apollo 8, Apollo 11, Apollo 14, Apollo 15, & Apollo 16 use Arabic numerals; the mission patches for Apollo VII, Apollo IX, Apollo X, Apollo XII, Apollo XIII, & Apollo XVII use Roman numerals. Six Arabic, six Roman; what's a fellow to do? With no clear consensus among the Apollo astronauts, I defer to the most famous mission of all, Apollo 11, & the broad public consensus of numbering Apollo missions with Arabic numerals.

They Might Be Giants, "Your Racist Friend" from Flood (Mike Papa Whiskey)

Commentary:
"This is where the party ends,
I can't stand here listening to you
And your racist friend.
I know politics bore you,
But I feel like a hypocrite talking to you
And your racist friend.

"It was the loveliest party that I've ever attended,
if anything was broken I'm sure it could be mended,
my head can't tolerate this bobbing and pretending,
listen to some bullet-head and the madness that he's saying.

"This is where the party ends,
I'll just sit here wondering how you
Can stand by your racist friend.
I know politics bore you,
But I feel like a hypocrite talking to you
And your racist friend…

"Out from the kitchen to the bedroom to the hallway
Your friend apologizes, he could see it my way.
He let the contents of the bottle do the thinking;
Can't share the Devil's hand and say you're only kidding…"

They Might Be Giants, "Space Suit" from Apollo 18 (Space Cadet Mike Papa Whiskey)

The Stars My Destination | Code Name: CHAOS

Jim McDivitt & Ed White planned to name their Gemini IV capsule the American Eagle, which would seem to conform quite well to N.A.S.A. management's desire for dignified names, but after wrestling with Gus Grissom over the name of Gemini 3's Molly Brown, the bosses simply banned astronauts naming their spacecraft. The ban endured from Gemini IV (June 1965) 'til Apollo 9 (March 1969), when the need for two distinct call signs for the two distinct spacecraft revived naming. One wonders what great spacecraft names (&, yes, knowing whom we're dealing with here, goofy spacecraft names) we missed out on through the remainder of Project Gemini. One also wonders, had McDivitt & White flown the American Eagle what, if any effect this would have had on the name of Apollo 11's iconic Lunar Module Eagle, which flew just four years later. The legacy of the American Eagle name survived in Gemini IV's mission patch, which in its depiction of a bald eagle bears some resemblance to the Apollo 11 & Apollo 16 mission patches.

Operation AXIOM: The Space Race—The 55th Anniversary of Gemini IV
3-7 June 1965: Gemini IV lifted off from Florida's Cape Kennedy Air Force Station, carrying Command Pilot Jim McDivitt & Pilot Ed White aboard a Gemini spacecraft atop a Titan II G.L.V. rocket; White became the first American to conduct an extravehicular activity (E.V.A., or "spacewalk"); after a N.A.S.A. record four days in orbit, they landed in the Atlantic & were recovered by the U.S.S. Wasp.

Commentary: The Gemini IV mission patch (below) was not flown in space, but designed after McDivitt & White's return to Earth. The duo were, however, the first astronauts to fly with the American flag sewn on their spacesuits, which has been de rigueur ever since.

Alan Bean is one of only twelve men to have walked on the Moon & one of only twenty-four men to have flown from the Earth to the Moon & back. But even within that elite fraternity, Bean stands alone: the only artist to have stood on another world. From his retirement from N.A.S.A. in 1981 'til this death in 2018, Bean chronicled Apollo, that amazing moment in time when astronauts from the United States came in peace for all mankind. Bean incorporated Moon dust into his paints & used a hammer he'd wielded on the Moon to texture his pictures to capture the rough, unfinished nature of the Moon.

The picture above is titled Conrad, Gordon, and Bean: The Fantasy, an imaginary scenario in which Commander Pete Conrad & Lunar Module Pilot Bean were somehow joined on the surface of the Moon by their good friend, Command Module Pilot Dick Gordon. The Fantasy is emblematic of Bean's approach: great effort is taken to get the details right, to make sure the spacesuits & equipment are accurate (because the Moon landings are real historical events), but because Bean is a painter & not a photographer he's most interested in capturing the sensation & emotions of walking on the Moon, meaning he adds color that wasn't actually present or depicts things that didn't happen, that couldn't have happened (Gordon never set foot on the Moon).

I reflect often by a line from Raiders of the Lost Ark, uttered by Doctor Henry Walton "Indiana" Jones Junior in his capacity as a professor at Marshall College:
"Archeology is the search for fact, not truth. If it's truth you're looking for, Dr. Tyree's philosophy class is right down the hall."
There are thousands of photographs of the Moon & reams of paper giving all the vital statistics of the great adventure & astonished achievement that was Project Apollo. Those give us the facts, but in his paintings Alan Bean strove to unveil the truth of Apollo, of man's peaceful conquest of the Moon.
