Magic!, "Rude" from Don't Kill the Magic (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)
Skammentary: Wayback Machine. We have always taken a very liberal attitude toward ska during SKApril, encompassing the successor genres (subgenres?) rocksteady & reggae, as well as ska- or reggae-influenced rock & pop songs. We intend always to maintain that very liberal attitude.

The Rebel Black Dot Song o' the Day: SKApril XVI
Blondie, "The Tide Is High" from the The Tide Is High single (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)
Skammentary: Welcome to SKApril, an April tradition since 2011!
I first heard "The Tide Is High" last summer, & immediately recognized it merited the SKApril limelight. If I ever heard "The Tide Is High" prior to last summer, it left no impression. We have always taken a very liberal view of ska in SKApril: "The Tide Is High" was originally recorded by The Paragons in 1966 as a rocksteady song, rocksteady being the intermediate stage between original roots ska & reggae.

The Rebel Black Dot Song o' the Day: SKAfter Party
Magic!, "Rude" from Don't Kill the Magic (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)
Skammentary: We here at the R.B.D.S.O.T.D. take a very liberal view of what constitutes "ska," including the spinoff genres of rocksteady, reggae, dub, dancehall, et al. Is "Rude" a ska song? No. Does "Rude" belong in the SKAfter Party, etc.? Yes. Feel free to disagree, just don't be rude about it.

The Rebel Black Dot Song o' Yesterday
Donnerstag, 12. September
Ken Boothe, "Everything I Own" from the Trojan Records: 40 Years, 40 Tracks compilation (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)
Skammentary: Apparently, "Everything I Own" is a cover song, written & originally performed by Bread. I've not heard Bread's version, but Boothe's remains haunting & heartbreaking.

Bonus! Song o' the Day: SKApril XIV
Ken Boothe, "Everything I Own" from the Trojan Records: 40 Years, 40 Tracks compilation (Rude Boy Bravo Charlie)
Skammentary: "Everything I Own" is wonderfully earnest about heartbreak & heartache, & Ken Boothe has a beautiful, soulful voice. That said, at the risk of seeming a Philistine, my ska-punk heart wouldn't object if "Everything I Own" was played twenty-five per cent to fifty per cent (25-50%) faster.

The Rebel Black Dot Song o' the Day: SKApril XIV
Amy Winehouse featuring Jools Holland, "Monkey Man" (live) from At the B.B.C. (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)
Skammentary: Recorded in 2006 on Jools Holland's television program. Never let it be said that we here at The Secret Base do not take a broadminded, "big tent" approach to SKApril. Written & originally recorded by Toots & the Maytals in 1969, "Monkey Man" has also been notably covered by The Specials & Reel Big Fish.

The Rebel Black Dot Song o' the Day
Smash Mouth, "Road Man" from Astro Lounge (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)
Commentary: I'm not going anywhere to except around town running fish fry errands, but methinks "Road Man" came to mind in part because I have a long journey coming up in a fortnight, the longest journey I'll undertake since the Before Times, before the pandemic & our botched response to the pandemic.

"This cool island breeze blows a little too cool,
This righteous, tasty bud makes me act like a fool,
Sand on my bottom at the end of the day.
The words to pretty girl that I just didn't say—
"I got some worries,
Some worries,
I got some worries,
Some worries…"

Good grooves will beat evil,

Put my best to the test, yeah,
Dem not gon' make me stop,
My shoulders to the wheel now
And I'll keep goin' strong!
Oh yeah-ah-ah, oh!

And we'll walk proud
With fists held in the air!
Oh yeah-ah-ah, oh yeah!…"
