Commentary: One of the key elements of The Original Series is humility. Captain Kirk & his crew—highly trained, highly intelligent, & experienced professionals—are powerless in the face of Charlie's vast telepathic & transmutational abilities, granted to Charlie by the energy-based Thasians. Despite the crew's sympathy for Charlie, they have no choice but to send him into permanent exile with the Thasians, condemning Charlie to a life without love or physical contact. Space is vast, & even with all the technological sophistication of the Federation, "There are more things in heaven & earth, Horato, than are dreamt of in your philosophy" (Hamlet, Act I, Scene V).
The eponymous Charlie was played by Robert Walker Jr. (1940-2019), son of the actor Robert Walker (1918-1951), best known for playing the villainous Bruno Antony in Alfred Hitchcock's Strangers On a Train.
