September 1916: The German army in East Africa, native askari led by German officers, the last vestige of Germany's colonial empire, ambushed & defeated their British South African pursuers; landships, code named "tanks" to obscure their purpose during shipment to the front, debuted at the Somme, though they had insufficient numbers to breakthrough; the Italians repeatedly tried to expand their bridgehead on the Austro-Hungarian side of the Isonzo River; & the Red Baron—Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen—scored the first of his eighty aerial victories.
