Operation AXIOM
6 September 1976: Soviet Air Defense Forces* pilot Lieutenant Viktor Belenko defected to the West, landing his MiG-25 Foxbat interceptor at Hakodate Airport, Hokkaido, Japan; the Japanese allowed American defense & intelligence officials to dismantle the Foxbat, which C.I.A. director George Bush called an "intelligence bonanza;" the MiG-25 was returned to the Soviets in pieces on 15 November.

Commentary: *The Soviet Air Defense Forces (literally, "Anti-Air Defense Troops") were a distinct service from the Soviet Air Force (literally, "Military Air Forces").

Viktor Ivanovich Belenko (15 February 1947-24 September 2023) retired to the United States with a comfortable trust fund, but feared for his life, living under false names & moving between small Midwestern towns every few years. He died of natural causes at age seventy-six.

The Belenko defection helped inspire Craig Thomas's 1977 novel, Firefox, adapted into Clint Eastwood's 1982 film of the same name. Similarly, the Storozhevoy barratry of November 1975, just ten months earlier, helped inspire Tom Clancey's 1984 novel, The Hunt for Red October, adapted into John McTiernan's 1990 film of the same name ("The Explorers' Club," № MCXX).
