She is a Christian saint & virgin martyress. She is one of seven women, who, along with the Blessed Virgin Mary, are commemorated by name in the Canon of the Mass.
Quoth the Holy Family bulletin:
Agatha suffered martyrdom at Catania in Sicily in 250. From antiquity her cult spread throughout the Church. A virgin martyr, St. Agatha is a model of purity, chastity, & dedication to Christ. Because of her martydom, she is invoked against diseases of the breast & outbreaks of fire. Her name Agatha means "good" in Greek.
