15 December 1925: Reza Khan took the imperial oath as Shah of Iran, inaugurating the Pahlavi dynasty; an army officer, he led the 1921 British-approved coup d'état against Ahmad Shah Qajar, becoming war minister & army chief in the new government; he did not declare Iran a republic as Atatürk had done in Turkey, but was elected Shah according to the Persian Constitution of 1906.
