Operation AXIOM: Destination Moon—The 60th Anniversary of Saturn-Apollo 2
25 April 1962: Saturn-Apollo 2 (Saturn I S.A.-2) lifted off from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station; new fuel-tank baffles in the S-I first stage eliminated the fuel sloshing seen during S.A.-1; water was used as ballast in the S-IV & S-V second & third stages; S.A.-2 was intentioned detonated in the atmosphere to study the diffusion of liquids in the ionosphere, known as Project Highwater.Commentary: Saturn-Apollo 2 lifted off two days after Ranger 4's Atlas-Agena launched & one day before Ranger 4 itself crashed onto the Moon's Far Side. Fast times at Cape Canaveral.
