Operation AXIOM: The Space Race—The 50th Anniversary of Skylab Rescue
August-September 1973: After a second (of four) R.C.S. thruster quad failed on the Skylab 3 C.S.M., an unnamed Apollo C.S.M., with two extra astronaut couches, was prepared for launch, to carry CDR Vance Brand & C.M.P. Don Lind to rescue Bean, Garriott, & Lousma; working in the simulator, Brand & Lind determined that Skylab 3 could return on their own with only two functional R.C.S. thrusters.Commentary: Brand & Lind remained on standby to fly Skylab Rescue through the remainer of Skylab 3 & throughout the whole of Skylab 4. There was talk of Brand & Lind flying a Skylab 5 mission with Science Pilot Bill Lenoir, in part to boost Skylab into a higher orbit, but it was decided that the Space Shuttle, then under development, would fly a Skylab orbital boost mission no later than 1979.
Bonus! Space Race Song o' the Day: Skylab Rescue
John Williams, "Luke's Rescue" from Star Wars: Episode V—The Empire Strikes Back: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Space Cadet Mike Papa DSKY)Commentary: This is not an official mission patch, to the best of my knowledge. As a reminder, Skylab Rescue never flew.
Semper exploro.
