23 December 1823: The poem "A Visit from Saint Nicholas" (A.K.A. "The Night before Christmas") was published anonymously in the Troy Sentinel newspaper; written by seminary professor Clement Clarke Moore, the poem massively influenced Americans' celebration of Christmas, focusing on gift-giving to children rather than the birth of the Christ, & named & numbered Santa Claus's reindeer.
