Commentary: "The Menagerie" was filmed as one episode, lengthened into two by inclusion of footage from the first series pilot, "The Cage" (production code: 001). For twenty years, until a V.H.S. release of "The Cage" in 1986, "The Menagerie" was the only way those scenes were accessible to the public. "The Menagerie" is merely a frame story for "The Cage" footage, & the only two-parter of The Original Series.
The only part of "The Menagerie" I dislike is the revelation that Commodore Mendez had not left Starbase with Captain Kirk aboard a shuttlecraft & had not been beamed aboard the Enterprise, thus Spock's court martial was not valid due to the presence of only two command officers, Captain Kirk & Fleet Captain Pike. The unnecessary deception makes the Talosians seem much more sinister than the rest of the episode, which depicts them as benevolent toward Pike.
