Episode o' the Day
"The Squire of Gothos" (season one, episode seventeen; production code: 018; 12 January 1967): Wikipedia-link.
Commentary: 'Tis a delightful coincidence & quite unintentional that I watched "The Squire of Gothos" on the fifty-ninth anniversary of its original broadcast.
Just as "Shore Leave" was the prototype for all the later T.N.G.-era holodeck episodes, "The Squire of Gothos" is the prototype for all the later T.N.G.-era Q episodes. Trelane, the eponymous squire of Gothos, is an immensely powerful energy-based being, though unlike Q, who reality-bending powers appear to be innnate, Trelane's reality-bending feats are accomplished through sophisticated "instrumentalities," machines that can be damaged by projectiles such as lead shot.
"The Squire of Gothos" is one of the truly classic episodes of The Original Series, highlighted by guest star William Campbell's performance as Trelane & the revelation that Trelane is a child, a juvenile member of his race who is disciplined by his parents for toying with Captain Kirk & company.
