No third party in the history of the Republic has accomplished any goal other than undermining the democratic process and providing for governance by a minority party. The Republican and Democratic Parties are both deeply flawed, but the broad-based appeal of each has allowed for a remarkable stability in the American body politic. Introduce more parties into the mix and we risk descending int the chaos of Italy or Israel, where the "governing" party holds not even a quarter of the seats in the Knesset. That said, my political id is already relishing the votes he'll take away from (probably) Senator Obama. Be they few or great in number, every little bit will help.
