Project BLACK MAMBA

Today is the memorial of Saint John Damascene (circa 676-749), monk, priest, Church Father, & Doctor of the Church: Saint-link Unus, Saint-link Duo, & Wikipedia-link.

Commentary: From the church bulletin:
For over thirty years, Saint John combined a life of prayer with the defense of veneration of images, & with his other writings. His holiness expressed itself in putting his literary & preaching talents at the service of the Lord. His devotion to the Blessed Mother & his sermons on her feasts are well known.
A friend of mine has of late been singing the praises of Jesuit spirituality. I remembered I had once purchased
The Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius (of Loyola), co-founder of the Jesuits & first Superior General of the order, for a class & I knew I still had it, so a few weeks ago I ascended into the attic to dig through my box of old college books, with an eye toward loaning it to him if he did not already have it. Not only did I find the Spiritual Exercises, but also On the Divine Images: Three Apologies against Those Who Attack the Divine Images by Saint John of Damascus (Damascene). Now to find the time to study either, or preferably both.
