October-December 1918: The Czechoslovak Republic declared its independence from the collapsing Austro-Hungarian Empire, signed by Tomáš Masaryk, Edvard Beneš, & Milan Štefánik (28 October); the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, & Slovenes—the Kingdom of Yugoslavia from 1929—was proclaimed by Serbian prince-regent Alexander Karađorđević, later King Alexander I the Unifer (1 December).
