William Shatner featuring Ernie Watts, "Lost in the Stars" from Seeking Major Tom (Space Cadet Mike Papa Whiskey)
Commentary: The album The Apollo Missions is a treasure trove of excerpts from the radio communications during the eleven manned Apollo flights: Apollos 7 thru 17. The Apollo Missions quite understandably, though still to my chagrin, places the least emphasis on the two Apollo missions that did not leave low Earth orbit, Apollo 7 & Apollo 9, which have five & ten excerpts, respectively, compared to thirty-one excerpts for Apollo 11 & thirty-three for Apollo 15. There are ten excerpts for Apollo 9, but the mission lasted eleven days; so, in any event one day was going to be without an excerpt, & we might as well take our medicine today.
This is the fourth time we here at The Secret Base have fully fêted an Apollo mission, with "Moonshot Songs of the Day" betwixt three episodes of "The Explorers' Club." Through the fêtes of Apollo 11, Apollo 12, & Apollo 8, no song was repeated & no band provided more than one song per mission. Given the specialized nature of the project, those protocols were never sustainable. Today's R.B.D.S.O.T.D. is the first time a band has furnished multiple songs to one mission. I think we'll make it through Apollo 9 without repeating any songs from previous missions, but even that is only a matter of time.
