9 April 1959: The "Mercury Seven," N.A.S.A.'s Astronaut Group 1, were announced: Alan B. Shepard Jr. (1923-1998), Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom (1926-1967), John H. Glenn Jr. (1921-2016), M. Scott Carpenter (1925-2013), Walter M. Schirra Jr. (1923-2007), L. Gordon Cooper Jr. (1927-2004), & Donald K. "Deke" Slayton (1924-1993); the Seven became icons, but couldn't buy life insurance.
