27 January 1968: The Wreck of the Minerve (S647)—The French sumarine Minerve disappeared in the Mediterranean Sea, one hour's sail from her home port of Toulon, with fifty-two souls aboard; the oceanographer Jacques Cousteau lead the Marine nationale's search & rescue effort, until 2 February 1968; the shipwreck was not located until July 2019 & the cause of the wreck remains a mystery.Commentary: The Minerve disappeared in the western Mediterranean two days after the Israeli submarine Dakar disappeared in the eastern Mediterranean.
