The Stars My Destination: Space Shuttle, 1984

The Space Age: The 40th Anniversaries of the Space Shuttle Program
There were two Space Shuttle flights in 1981, three in 1982, four in 1983, & five in 1984. The headline is the new numbering scheme, the ninth flight, S.T.S.-9, being followed by the tenth flight, S.T.S.-41-B. (4 = Fiscal year 1984, 1 = launched from the Kennedy Space Center, B = second flight of the fiscal year. Work was underway to launch Shuttles from Vandenberg Air Force Base on the West Coast; those flights would have been designated with the number 2, e.g., S.T.S.-62-A.) 1984 was the year of the Manned Maneuvering Unit, a jetpack that allowed for untethered Extravehicular Activity. The M.M.U. produced some of the most iconic photographs of the entire Space Shuttle Program.

The 1985 IMAX documentary The Dream Is Alive focused on S.T.S.-41-C, with additional footage from S.T.S.-51-A, S.T.S.-41-D, & S.T.S.-41-G, et al.
