Operation AXIOM: The Space Age—The 40th Anniversary of S.T.S.-41-C (№ 11), Part I
6-7 April 1984: The Space Shuttle Challenger OV-099 lifted off from Florida's K.S.C. with CDR Bob Crippen, Pilot Dick Scobee, M.S.1 "T.J." Hart, M.S.2 "Ox" van Hoften, & M.S.3 "Pinky" Nelson; the quintet deployed the Long Duration Exposure Facility, a satellite covered with fifty-seven materials science experiments, & prepared to rescue & repair the crippled Solar Maximum Mission (SolarMax).
Commentary: S.T.S.-41-C was the fifth flight of the Challenger OV-099.

"Ox" van Hoften, "Pinky" Nelson, & on the previous flight, S.T.S.-41-B, "Hoot" Gibson. Truly, this was a golden age of astronaut nicknames!
