Episode o' the Day
"Blood Oath" (season two, episode nineteen; 28 March 1994): Wikipedia-link.
Commentary: Kang! Kor! Koloth! "Blood Oath" features the first time Klingons from The Original Series era appeared in The Next Generation era, establishing continuity between the swarthy T.O.S. Klingons & the forehead ridge T.N.G. Klingons. Kor (John Colicos, "Errand of Mercy"), Koloth, (William Campbell, "The Trouble with Tribbles"), & Kang (Michael Ansara, "Day of the Dove") all faced off against Captain Kirk on The Original Series. The Klingons have never been my favorite Star Trek aliens, but "Blood Oath" is one of my favorite Klingon episodes.
Lieutentant Dax's characterization in "Blood Oath" is consistent with her actions in the season one episode, "Dax." In the latter episode, while Sisko wrangles with the alien Klaestrons, Jadzia refuses to betray a confidence of Curzon's, even though keeping his secret may lead to her execution for Curzon's supposed crimes (of which he was innocent & she is eventually cleared). Here, Jadzia still feels herself bound by a murderous blood oath taken by Curzon, despite the initial opposition of Kang & Koloth & the ongoing opposition of Sisko & Kira. In season four's "Rejoined," Jadzia will be tempted to rekindle a romance of the Dax symbiont's previous host, Torias. It is one thing for the law to say a new Trill host is not bound by the obligations of the previous host, but it is quite another thing for the new host & the symbiont not to feel bound by the previous host's affections & commitments.
