Operation AXIOM
20 April 1974: The last inhabitants were evacuated from Hashima Island in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, A.K.A. Gunkanjima ("Battleship Island"), leaving the typhoon-resistant reinforced concerete architecture as a time capsule; Hashima was first inhabited in the 1880s as a coal mine & built up through land reclamation—tripling the island's size—until petroleum replaced coal, closing the mine.
