In Christianity, it is a day commemorating the faithful departed, particularly but not exclusively one's relatives. In Western Christianity the annual celebration is now held on 2 November & is associated with All Saints' Day (1 November) & its vigil, Hallowe'en (31 October).
Quoth the Holy Family bulletin:
On this feast, we commemorate all of the faithful departed, those who have died in Christ. This day & the whole month of November is dedicated to prayer for those in Purgatory; that they may be relieved of their suffering & enter (into) eternal happiness in heaven. During this time, we receive special graces when we pray for our deceased loved ones or visit a cemetery.

Patron of: Biloxi, Vietnam, Mississippi, black [persons], hair stylists, innkeepers… lottery winners, mixed-race [persons], Peru, poor [persons], public education, public health… race relations, social justice… television, Mexico, Peruvian Naval Aviators.
Quoth the Holy Family bulletin:
The son of a Spanish father & a freed black women, Martin was born in Lima, Peru in 1579. His mother gave him a Christian education & he learned to be a pharmacist & a nurse. Against his father's wishes, he entered the Dominican order in 1603 as a lay brother. He was assigned to be the infirmarian of the priory, but became well known for his work with the sick & the poor. He died at the age of sixty. He was a man of great humility & charity. There is a statue of St. Martin de Porres in the right transept of our church.
