The Space Race—The Mercury Seven, Part V
Malcolm Scott Carpenter (1 May 1925-10 October 2013), Commander, U.S. Navy—He flew Mercury-Atlas 7 (Aurora 7, 1962), the second American orbital mission, then took a leave of absence from N.A.S.A. to join the Navy's SEALAB project; he was injured in a motorcyle crash & removed from flight status, before spending twenty-eight days underwater as an aquanaut during SEALAB II (1965).
