Scripture of the Day
Mass Readings—Wednesday of the Fourth Week of Easter
The Acts of the Apostles, chapter twelve, verse twenty-four thru chapter thirteen, verse five(a);
Psalm Sixty-seven, verses two & three, five, & six & eight;
The Gospel according to John, chapter twelve, verses forty-four thru fifty.

Commentary: Reflection by Bishop Robert Barron (Word on Fire):
Friends, in today’s Gospel Jesus makes it clear once again that he and the Father are one. God is not a force or an energy or a spiritual presence occupying the deep background of your life; he’s not something that you can tap into when you feel like it. Nor is God a distant supreme being who organized the universe long ago and now leaves it to its own devices.

Rather, God is the Lord. He is the commander, the ruler, the governor, the one who makes a demand and who then involves himself intimately in the affairs of the world.

More to it, this Lord is one. This is, as argued by Joseph Ratzinger (now Pope
Emeritus Benedict XVI), a subversive statement, for it undermines anyone or anything else’s claim to be absolute. No country, no president, no prime minister, no culture, no book, no person or political party is absolute—only God. The unity of God, for Jews and Christians, is not simply a theoretical claim; it is an enormously important existential claim. Jesus and the Father are one God who is the Lord of all creation.
Video reflection by Jem Sullivan, Ph.D.: United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Mass Readings—Optional Memorial of St. Isidore
The Book of Revelation, chapter nineteen, verses one & five thru nine(a);
Psalm One Hundred Three, verse one;
The Gospel according to Matthew, chapter eleven, verses twenty-five thru thirty.

Scripture Study—Day 91: Reflection Peak, Day 13
The Book of Genesis, chapter two, verses six & seven.

Commentary: Another Account of Creation (cont'd; Genesis, 2:6-7).

Papal Quote o' the Day
"quotIn the special manifestation to St. Margaret Mary, Christ pointed to His Heart as the symbol by which we are drawn to recognize & acknowledge His love. At the same time, He constituted it as a sign & pledge of His mercy & His grace for the needs of the Church in our time."
—Pope Venerable Pius XII (1876-1958)
Little Flower Quote o' the Day
"Do not let your weakness make you unhappy. When, in the morning, we feel no courage or strength for the practice of virtue, it is really a grace: it is the time to 'lay the axe to the root of the tree,' relying on Jesus alone."
—St. Thérèse of Lisieux, Doctor of the Church (1873-1897, feast day: 1 October)
Saint Quote o' the Day
"Picture the marriage feast of Cana. There our Blessed Lord is beyond the Jordan, gathering up His first disciples. Mary is already at the feast. The Lord comes with His new disciples, & Mary, who always knows our wants before we know them, says, “They have no wine.” They had water, the water of the Old Testament, but they had no wine. And Jesus replies, “Woman”—not mother—“Woman, what to me is to thee?” That is the way it is in the original. “My hour has not yet come.” The hour refers to His Passion & death, His combat with evil. Now He is equivalently saying to His Mother,“My dear Mother, you want Me to begin My public life, to declare Myself the Messiah & the Son of God. Do you realize that the moment I do that, your relationship to Me changes? You will then no longer be My Mother. You will then be the Mother of everyone whom I will redeem. You will be the universal Mother of all mankind. You will be the woman of Genesis. You will be the Mother of the living.” Mary’s heart must have burned at not hearing herself called “Mother.” So our Blessed Lord, it seems, anticipated His public life. It is not often that mothers send their sons to the battlefield. Mary did. If the Father sent the Son, the Mother would send the Son."
—Venerable Fulton Sheen (1895-1979)

Scripture of the Day
Mass Readings—Feast of Saint Mathias
The Acts of the Apostles, chapter one, verses fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, & twenty thru twenty-six;
Psalm One Hundred Thirteen, verses one & two, three & four, six & six, & seven & eight;
The Gospel according to John, chapter fifteen, verses nine thru seventeen.

Commentary: Reflection by Bishop Robert Barron (Word on Fire):
Friends, in today’s Gospel Jesus announces to his disciples: "I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father."

Many mysticisms and philosophies of the ancient world—Platonism and Gnosticism come readily to mind—spoke of God or the sacred, but they spoke of it as a force or a value or an ontological source. It was impersonal and at an infinite remove from the world of ordinary experience. These ancient schools find an echo in many modern and contemporary theologies. Think of deism, which was so influential on the founders of the United States, or even the New Age philosophy of our time. These speak of a "divine" principle or power, but one would never dream of addressing such a force as "thou" or of engaging with it in intimate conversation.

Then there is the Bible. The Scriptures obviously present God as the overwhelming, transcendent, uncontrollable, inscrutable Creator of the heavens and the earth, but they insist that this sublime and frightening power is a person who deigns to speak to us, to guide us, and to invite us into his life.

In making that utterance—"I no longer call you slaves, but friends"—Jesus turned all of religious philosophy and mysticism on its head.

Papal Quote o' the Day
"Today the Church is alive. Despite all contrary appearances, the Church is united. The Church is & remains the yeast in the dough, the signal among nations."
—Pope St. Paul VI (1897-1978, feast day: 26 September)
Little Flower Quote o' the Day
"Our mission as Carmelites is to form evangelical workers who will save thousands of souls."
—St. Thérèse of Lisieux, Doctor of the Church (1873-1897, feast day: 1 October)
Saint Quote o' the Day
"What was the liberation Mary stood for? First of all, she stood for life. Here was a young woman who was so poor she had nothing but doves to offer at the temple. There was no housing, so for childbirth she had to go to a stable. There’s the shame associated with a virgin bearing a child. And with all of that poverty & all of that shame, should she have aborted? No, she believed in liberation for life. She also believed in liberation for justice. What greater declaration of justice is there than the Magnificat of Mary? Speaking of exalting the poor, & exalting the humble, this is the liberation of justice."
—Venerable Fulton Sheen (1895-1979)

Save Ferris, "Anything" from the Checkered Past E.P. (The Last Angry Rude Boy)

Skammentary: Of course, just because love never works out in ska-punk doesn't mean that ska kids, both rude girls & rude boys, are immune from romance's entrancing powers, from seduction by its empty promises.
"…You work so hard to give my everything,
You got one knee and gave me a ring,
You hold me when I am sad, you smile when I am glad,
You buy me lots of presents and take me to Disneyland.

"You're just my favorite,
You're just my favorite,
And you might be the one.
You're just my favorite,
You're just my favorite,
And you might be the one.

"All my friends seem to like you,

The Hippos, "Wasting My Life" from Heads Are Gonna Roll (The Last Angry Rude Boy)

Skammentary: Ah, good old third wave ska-punk, wherein love is a lie & following your heart inevitably leads to heartbreak! I love roots ska from Jamaica, the 2-Tone revival, & the emerging "fourth wave," but ska-punk is where I started. It's a place like home (Wayback Machine).
"Something in the way she never looks my way—
I'm in love, I'm in love.
Something in the way she doesn't hear a word I say—
I'm in love, I'm in love.

"But people say we're not the same,
She's out of my league, I'm insane.

"Am I wasting my life waiting for you?
Wasting my life waiting for you?
Wasting my life waiting for you?
Is it true, am I wasting my life on you?

"So tell me it's not true, ooo-wee-ooo.

"Something in the way she looked at me today—
I'm in love, I'm in love.
Something in the way she says for me to get away—
I'm in love, I'm in love.

"Am I wasting my life waiting for you?
Wasting my life waiting for you?
Wasting my life waiting for you?
Is it true, am I wasting my life on you?

"So tell me it's not true, ooo-wee-ooo.
Yeah!

"Wasting my life waiting for you!
Wasting my life waiting for you!
Is it true, am I wasting my life on you?
Wasting my life waiting for you!
Wasting my life waiting for you!
Is it true, am I wasting my life on you?
On you?"
The accompanying photo is from the feature film
She's Out of My League, the choice inspired by the line in "Wasting My Life's" pre-chorus. Yes, I am aware of the essential unsuitability of this photo, since in She's Out of My League the boy gets the girl, &, no, I don't care.

Operation AXIOM: After the World War
13 April 1919: The Amritsar Massacre—Against the background of a hartal (more than a general strike, a total shutdown of all commercial activity) called by Gandhi on 6 April that had turned violent in some places, the Raj authorities feared an uprising in the Punjab, a repeat of the Mutiny of 1857; Indian Army troops opened fire on an unarmed crowd, killed at least 379 & wounding 1,100-plus.

Commentary: The massacre was dramatically presented in the motion picture Gandhi.

The Ska Vengers, "Frank Brazil" from XX (The Last Angry Man)

Commentary: "Frank Brazil" tells the story of Udham Singh (1899-1940, A.K.A. "Ram Mohammad Singh Azad"), an Indian terrorist who assassinated Michael O'Dwyer, aged seventy-five, in 1940. In 1919, a younger O'Dwyer had been lieutenant governor of Punjab under the Raj & had endorsed the Amritsar Massacre as a "correct action." Singh's assassination of O'Dwyer, coming twenty-one years after Amritsar, was not a crime of passion, but had been plotted for many years. In Singh's journals from 1939 & 1940, O'Dwyer is often referenced as O'Dyer, meaning Singh might well have conflated him with Reginald Dyer, the commander on the ground at Amritsar. Of course, as a terrorist, Singh had little regard for human life; we know his attitude from the facts that several others, who had nothing at all to do with the Amritsar Massacre, were wounded in the assassination of O'Dwyer & that after his arrest, Singh expressed disappointment that he'd murdered only one person. Mohandas Gandhi called Singh's assassination of O'Dwyer "an act of insanity" & it was also denounced at the time by Jawaharlal Nehru, though later in life, as prime minister of an independent India, Nehru praised Singh's actions. The date of Singh's execution is today observed as holiday in Punjab.

The Ska Vengers' admiration of a murderer like Udham Singh, even under the fig leaf of Indian independence, is at odds with ska's universal call of peace & reconciliation. It also renders laughable & hypocritical the band's critiques of India's current prime minister, Narendra Modi, himself a murderous thug. Because of their hypocritical endorsement of violence The Ska Vengers are not now nor will they ever be a part of SKApril.

Operation Ivy, "Unity" from Operation Ivy (The Last Angry Rude Boy)

Skammentary:
"There's a war coming down
Between my brothers tonight,
I don't want no war,
Going down, throwing down tonight.

"Stop this war!

"All so different, yeah, I say we're all the same,
All caught, you know, in the division game,
Self destruction, fast, impending like a bullet,
No one can stop it once its fired, no one can control it!

"Stop this war!
Stop this war!

A final word, wait, it's not a call to action,
We ain't no sect, no, this ain't no fucking faction,
Unity, unity, unity, you've heard it all before,
This time its not exclusive: we want to stop a war!

Edna's Goldfish, "Purple" from Before You Knew Better… (The Last Angry Rude Boy)

Skammentary: This is a plea for peace. Stop the violence, especially within our homes, within families.
"Question me about my bruises,
He's the one who wins and I'm the one who always loses,
Through all the fights and fits of anger,
The marks will fade but the pain still lingers,
He says he's been mistook,
He said he wrote a new page in his book,
I'd like to know if this is at all true,
What would you do if it were you?
What would you do if it were you?
What would you do?…"

The English Beat, "Whine & Grine/Stand Down Margaret" from I Just Can't Stop It (The Last Angry Rude Boy)

Skammentary: I take no small satisfaction in listening to British ska & punk from the late 1970s & early '80s, noting both the panicked, nigh apocalyptic attitude toward then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher & how utterly wrong subsequent events proved those attitudes to be. I say again today, as I have said before & I will surely say again, Never Trump, but that doesn't mean I've suddenly come to agree with all the just plain wrongheaded left-wing politics in some of the music I like.

Also, in the U.K., The English Beat is known simply as The Beat (& in Australia as "The British Beat"); the best thing about "Whine & Grine/Stand Down Margaret" is not the lyrics, but that 2-Tone beat that makes my heart skank.

The Acts of the Apostles, chapter seven, verse fifty-one thru chapter eight, verse one(a);
Psalm Thirty-one, verses three(c/d) & four; six, seven(b), & eight(a); & seventeen & twenty-one(a/b);
The Gospel according to John, chapter six, verses thirty thru thirty-five.

Commentary: Reflection by Bishop Robert Barron (Word on Fire):
Friends, today’s Gospel is from the bread of life discourse: "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst." What God has wanted from the beginning is to sit down with his creatures in a fellowship banquet, sharing life and laughter, giving, receiving, and giving back again.

This is the loop of grace. The more we receive the divine life, the more we should give it away and thereby get more of it.

Throughout the Old Testament, we find images of the holy banquet. On God’s holy mountain, Isaiah says there will be good meats and pure choice wines. And throughout his ministry, Jesus hosts meals to which all are invited. God wants to share his life with us.

This comes to fullest expression at the Eucharist, where Jesus identifies himself so radically with the bread and the wine that they change into his Body and Blood, and then invites all of us around this table to feast and share life, to give and to receive and to give again.

Saint Quote o' the Day
"The Church then has had a virgin birth. As we lose our respect for the virgin birth of Christ, we lose our respect for the virgin birth of the Church. We no longer understand her as the bride of Christ. When we get to heaven, in what celebration are we going to assist? Nuptials: the marriage of the Lamb. In the twelfth chapter of the book of Revelation we have another image of the Blessed Mother in the constant struggle of the Church, or the bride, with the devil. “And there appeared a great portent in heaven, a woman robed with the sun, beneath her feet the moon & on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was pregnant & in the anguish of her labor she cried out to be delivered.” The original Greek is in the present tense. Even in the Book of Revelation the Blessed Mother is always bringing forth children. That’s the Church."

We spent our days preparing for
A fight, a fight, a fight that never lets up…"

Operation AXIOM: After the World War—The Red Scare, Part V
1 May 1919: The Cleveland May Day Riots—Socialist marchers carrying red flags, organized by Communist Party U.S.A. founder C.E. Ruthenberg, descended on Cleveland to demand the release from prison of Eugene V. Debs & clashed with police, soldiers, & workers who supported the Victory Liberty Loan; the daylong violence ended with two deaths & a public bonfire of red flags & banners.

Lest we forget.

Melbourne Ska Orchestra, "Lygon Street Meltdown" from Melbourne Ska Orchestra (The Last Angry Rude Boy)

Skammentary: Ska, as a genre, covers a range of musical styles & influences; the Melbourne Ska Orchestra (M.S.O.) falls squarely within the jazzy end of the genre. The M.S.O. also lives up to the orchestra moniker, boasting up to thirty-four members.) "Lygon Street Meltdown" upholds ska's venerable tradition of beseeching rude boys to amend their wayward ways while there is yet time.
"…Gangland wars in town,
Here come the Lygon Street meltdown.

"He recalled his mother's words:
'Crime will never pay,'
You cross the line,
Then you will suffer.

"Lygon Street meltdown!
Lygon Street meltdown!
Lygon Street meltdown!"
According to my research, Lygon Street is the heart of Melbourne's Little Italy.

Operation ÖSTERREICH

Weekly Wednesday Weigh-in
Last weigh-in: 308.4 lbs (Wednesday, 17 April)
This weigh-in: 318.8 lbs.
Difference: +10.4 lbs.

Worse than I feared, but hardly surprising given how much I've eaten & how much beer I've drunk. I ate, I drank, & I was merry, because—Alleluia!—Christ is risen! Christus resurrexit! Christus resurrexit vere! Easter, the Paschaltide, rolls on for more than another month, but the post-Exodus 90 pigging out has come to an end. I've made too much progress to go back to my wicked old ways; so, time to reapply my bulbous nose to the grindstone. The three-hundred-pound barrier awaits. Two hundred ninety-nine, here I come!

Bonus! Lied von ÖSTERREICH
Reel Big Fish, "Why Do All Girls Think They're Fat?" from Monkeys for Nothin' and the Chimps for Free (The Last Angry Easter Feaster)

Skammentary:
"There's a (Little girl!) on my mind,
(Little girl!) All the time!
(Little girl!) It's always one!
(Little girl!) Look what she's done!

"She makes me look at her thighs,
You know I don't have to lie,
But why can't I tell her?
You know she's so beautiful,
And why do all girls think they're fat?

"(Hey, hey, hey!) She's so pretty!
(Hey, hey, hey!) My friend!
(Hey, hey, hey!) I feel stupid, again!

"(She said!) It's alright,
(She said!) Come over tonight,
(She said!) Mom's not home,
(She said!) I'm all alone.

"Sh drove me back to her house,
She pushed me down on the couch,
She said, 'Now, it's alright,
We're gonna just be friends,
'Cause that kissing only leads to the end.'

"(Hey, hey, hey!) She's so pretty!
(Hey, hey, hey!) My friend!
(Hey, hey, hey!) I feel stupid, again!"

[shredding guitar interlude]

"(Hey, hey, hey!) She's so pretty!
(Hey, hey, hey!) My friend!
(Hey, hey, hey!) I feel stupid, again!
(Hey, hey, hey!) She's so pretty!
(Hey, hey, hey!) My friend!
(Hey, hey, hey!) I feel stupid!"

Less Than Jake, "Plastic Cup Politics" from Anthem (The Last Angry Rude Boy)

Skammentary:
"Hello, Mr. Six Pack of Confidence,
I'm glad to see you've already met
Ms. Twelve Ounces of Loneliness
And Mr. Plastic Cup Politics.
I see you're under the influence
Of warm beer and the comfort of all your friends,
And I see that Mr. Loud Mouth
Has had his forty ounce and will pass out,
I have no doubt,
So drop your plastic cup and clear your clouded heads!

"I keep asking myself if they realize
That their fears are really just the same as mine?
Do you know how your insecurities
Are the same ones that I have inside of me?
As people come and go
Do they know they're really not alone?
And the life of the party just left
I guess I couldn't cure his emptiness,
Like all the rest,
So drop your plastic cups and clear your clouded heads!
Clear your clouded heads!…"
