10-11 May 1918: The Battle of Kaniów—The Polish II Corps in Russia, comprised of former Austro-Hungarian & former Russian units (united after Polish national ambitions were ignored in the Treaty of Brest-Litvosk), was defeated by the Germans in central Ukraine; the stiff Polish resistance became legendary, but half were taken P.O.W. & their commander, General Haller, fled into exile in France.
