The Rebel Black Dot Song o' the Day

Monday of the First Week in Ordinary Time
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, "I Don't Believe in Anything" from When God Was Great (Rude Boy Mike Papa Whiskey)

Skammentary: Our institutions—the church, the government, the academy, journalism—have been corrupted & have been crumbling since before I was born; faith in those institutions has been collapsing, starting long before the pandemic, & that collapse is accelerating.
"As we calmly start to panic,
All the mayhem makes me manic.

"So don't tell me that there's a downside,
Can't you see it's going worldwide?
I don't believe in anything,
Mabye I don't believe in, I don't believe in,
Don't tell me what your rules are,
Usually that won't get you too far,
And you know you can too can't believe it,
What I believe is I don't believe in anything…

"We are slowly going faster,
Headlong into a disaster…"
This news ought to be distressing to one & all: Anarchy is not a viable option, human flourishing requires robust & reliable institutions. I'm not convinced our current institutions can be salvaged & reformed, but despair is a sin & thus I am convinced that nihilism is not a viable option. What do we do? Kipling has wisdom from which we can learn much (from "If—").
"If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gace your life to, broken,
And stoop & build 'em up with worn-out tools…

"Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And—which is more—you'll be a Man, my son!"
