Section 31: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993-2024)

Episode o' the Day
"Explorers" (season three, episode twenty-two; 8 May 1995): Wikipedia-link.

Commentary: "Explorers" is a delight, an episode with a light touch, yet not outright comedic like a Ferengi story. "The Die Is Cast" marked a the last time we would see a cleanshaven Sisko; he debuted the Van Dyke (moustache plus goatee) that he would retain for the rest of the series in "Explorers," but he was not yet shaving his head. Additionally, Jake first mentions a freighter captain he thinks his father ought to date, though the character—Kasidy Yates—would not be named & appear on-screen until the following episode, "Family Business." In yet another first, "Explorers" also saw the debut of Leeta, the dabo girl, & a scene in which Dax hilariously cockblocks Bashir.

There is an excellent scene between Bashir & O'Brien, drunk as skunks & singing drinking songs, as Bashir deals with the arrival on Starbase Deep Space 9 of the valedictorian of his Starfleet medical school class, Doctor Lense, to whom Bashir finished as salutatorian. O'Brien counsels Bashir that the latter evokes strong reactions: persons either love Bashir or hate him; Miles admits he originally hated Julian, but now he doesn't. The chief never says he loves the doctor, but it is high comedy as he drunkenly assures his best friend that he really does not hate him.

The Bajoran lightship that Sisko builds (see: above) & which the Siskos sail all the way to Cardassia is a great design by the production crew, unlike any other ship seen on
Star Trek.
