The Explorers' Club, № MXXXI

Operation AXIOM: Between the Wars
8-9 June 1924: George Mallory (1886-1924) & Andrew "Sandy" Irvine (1902-1924) perished on Mount Everest, having possibly reached the summit; the duo were last seen alive during their ascent on 8 June; when asked why he wanted to climb Everest, Mallory famously replied, "Because it's there;" Mallory's corpse was discovered on the mountain in 1999, Irvine's corpse has never been located.
Commentary: Because of the perilous conditions on Mount Everest, the corpses of dead climbers cannot be transported down & are left on the mountain. Mallory's corpse was not left out in the open, as it was discovered, but was interred on Everest.
Requiescant in pace.
